Show The removal of the unsightly poles in the center of Salt Lake's streets is going to practically result in the rehabilitation of the thoroughfares affected. Every tourist that has come to the city has remarked on the forest of poles stretching its unwieldy and dismantled way along such beautiful avenues. In addition to the ugliness of the poles, there is also the danger. To put one's head out of a car window is very risky and has frequently resulted in severe injury and quite often death. The street railroad company should receive lull meed of praise, for it is costing a fortune to make the change. Every new pole is of steel, sunk in cement beds, and made to withstand with-stand elements and wear and tear. It is true it is not a labor of love on the part of the railroad company, nor is it done altogether with unselfish motives. The wooden poles now in use would have to be replaced every few years. The metal poles should, and probably will, last for tens of years. By city ordinance the change is made, but that it will result in a benefit and a beautifier is beyond any question of doubt. |
