Show The Western Weekly's Automobile Section H THE HILL CLIMBING CONTEST. The Telegram's hill climbing contest is to be decided today and considerable interest is felt in automobile circles as to what the result will be. The races, which are to commence at 2 o'clock, are to be run over a one and one-half mile course, from Seventh East street, on South Temple street, up onto the government reservation. The cars will get a running start from Sixth East street, but time will not be taken till they pass Seventh East. There are to be nine events and the winner of each will be presented pre-sented with a cup. Two machines will race at a time and the two making the fastest time in the heats will run off the final for the cup. The programme is as follows: No. 1 For electric machines. No. 2 For touring cars and runabouts costing $1,000 or under. 9 No. 3 For touring cars and runabouts costing $1,500 or under. No. A For touring cars and runabouts costing $2,000 or under. No. 5 For touring cars costing $3,000 or under. No. 6 For stripped touring cars or runabouts costing $3,000 or under. No. 7 For touring cars costing $5,000 or under. No. 8 For stripped touring cars or runabouts costing $5,000 or under. No. 9 Free for all. The list of officials is as follows: Referee, Wallace Bransford; clerk of the course, E. R. WJieelon ; clerk of the entries, W. E. Ma-carton; Ma-carton; starter, Frank Gardner; official announcer, Dr. Fred Meakin. Judges: S. V. Dcrrah, Walker Salisbury, Frank Knox, Brigham H. Roberts, Orson Hewlett, Samuel Park and Dr. Fred Stauffcr. Timers : James P. Jennings, Gus Holmes, Sam Porter, Judge C. B. Diehl, J. C. Lynch and W. E. Macarton. The cups to be presented to the winners arc all well worth the effort to win them, and some of them are particularly handsome. The donors are : Samuel Newhouse, Tony Jacobson, Willard F. Snyder, W. H. Childs and Harry B. Cole, Wallace M. Bransford, Col. E. A. Wall, B. B. Heywood, John Condon, the Evening Telegram. Special mention may be made of the Newhouse trophy, which is HH the most expensive of any cup that has ever been presented in this HH country. It is of Tiffany design. Mr. Samuel Newhouse is, as usual, H right to the front in anything that has the boosting of Utah for its HH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CONSIDER THE GOOD ROADS EH QUESTION. EQI An important meeting was held on Tuesday in the county com- . HH missioncrs' office between representatives of the city and county IH and the Salt Lake Automobile club, relative to the roads of this city HH and county. HH Mayor Bransford represented Salt Lake City at the meeting and HH Commissioners John C. Mackay and James E. Clinton the county ; HH President O. IT. Hewlett of the Salt Lake Automobile club, while HH E. D. Miller represented the automobilists. HH Many good ideas were brought up and suggestions made for the H betterment of roads in the city and county. On the Fifth East drive, BH between Eleventh and Twelfth South, where many complaints have H been made recently on account of the ditches flooding over into the H street, leaving dangerous holes, an interesting situation was devel- bH oped. It was shown that the county owns the west side of the road IH and the city the eastern portion. It was arranged between Mayor HH Bransford and Commissioner Mackay to make a personal trip down VH there and arrange jointly for the city and county to put the road in IH good repair. Culverts will be put on each side of the road to keep the iH water from flooding the streets and also raise it up so that it will be IH much better for traveling in the future. The idea is to make an ideal H boulevard out of this street. Some complaints have also been made H as to non-sprinkling, as at times the boulevard has been so dusty that H it has been impossible to drive along it without being literally H "drowned in dust." It was promised that in future the street would H be kept properly sprinkled. H There is about half a mile of bad road this side of Murray which H the county is going to begin work on at once to put in good repair. I Murray City has charge of a good distance of the streets both sides j of their town and they have levied a 3-mill special tax to be applied II to road repairs in order to have their roads in as good a condition p as those of the county, j, Commissioner Mackay, who is in charge of the roads outside of u Salt Lake City, is giving orders to have some of the bad crossings, I which have been so dangerous to both teams and automobiles, lowered and leveled, i It also transpired at this meeting that the bridge over the canal J near Crescent is the property of the city and not of the county, as was supposed. It is in very bad condition and continual complaints J have been made about it during the last two or three years, but as Jj these have all been addressed to the county, nothing has been done V - up to the present. Mayor Bransford promised to give the matter his immediate attention and see if a new bridge cannot be erected in place of the old one. There were also complaints about the electric light and telephone poles near the southwest gate of Liberty park, which have been the 1 1( cause of several accidents. Mayor Bransford was asked to look into j the matter and see if they could not be removed, so as to save any 1 trouble in the future. ! County Surveyor Joseph Swenson was also present and pointed Li out a number of improvements that have already been made to the county roads, and he and Commissioner Mackay agreed to go over W the roads and line out Any further improvements that they may think ' necessary. The county commissioners are also going to send out notices .to all street supervisors to see that the ordinance forbidding i the overflowing of irrigation ditches is strictly enforced in the future, as the flooding of the roads from this source makes it dangerous to ?.ll vehicular travel. Many other good suggestions were made at the meeting and the cordial way in which they were received by the commissioners of both the county and the city is proof enough of the willingness of these officials to do all in their power to aid in making our roads j a model for the rest of the state to copy. Great credit is due to the committee of the Salt Lake Automobile club for the energetic way L in which they have been going after "good roads," and they are to 1 1 be congratulated for the success that has already met their efforts.
