Show 4 BB 11 girls iris enjoy camp life at big cottonwood by elsie green monday morning dawned bright and clear most of us 4 H people know that to be a fact because we were up at dawn to start allons for that long awaited trip to the spruces in big cottonwood canyon about 8 30 people and things b be e gan to collect at the bus station for we went on the tooele thoele salt lake stages same as last year by 9 15 most all the kids were load ed but there was a lot of baggage that couldn t be tucked in any place the result we had to get a truck to take the rest of it and those that were left about noon when we arrived we were wishing that someone would have a steak french fried pota toes and apple pie ala mode all prepared pie pared for us but no such luck we had to prepare some sand and get busy and set up camp jay ericson our popular mayor of last year was placed in that position again with lola jefferies Jef fenes as secretary and elsie green as scribe for the camp mr mardin broadbent extension livestock Specia specialist lis t from the agn agri cultural college at logan joined us for the three day camp as a rep of the state club organ after the evening meal the crowd congregated at the alphi theatre for the first campfire pro gram we call em each group had a number for the program and the accordion playing of carol gus haveson dancing of sharol mueller and the singing of many of the club members and leaders will long remain in our memories next morning most of our peo pie were up bright and early get ting their breakfast over and done with and their camps shined after flag raising the group sat down to help mr broadbent identify the plant specimens which he had when they got through each group was sent out to collect one of each and name them when they brought them back at the end of a half an hour or so in the afternoon the groups got together to do the handicraft work which consisted of braiding boon doggie into bracelets necklaces headbands watch chains and key rings even the boys had a good time ime doing this following supper there was an other program which all the clubs took part in colleen white ed using a jumping rope the hap py y seven club wrote and present ed one of their original skits then we had the usual songs and dances from the various members of the roup group after the program am we hurried to the he campfire where we could get warm we sang and then had a watermelon bust this time we went to our camps to sleep that is most of us did but some wept went to the tie camp of the livestock club for a party and some just went visit ing this year the boys broke last year years s record of seven seconds by sawing the log through in just six don on gowans and floyd walters of boele made this impressive show ing lorraine castagno of erda and eina ina bevan of tooele thoele teamed up and sawed their piece of log off in eight seconds maybe next year the girls will beat the boys at our award assembly the fol lowing people were given prizes for the best program numbers car ol 01 gustaveson colleen white and janice received awards the boys log sawing team and the girls log sawing team each won a prize two prizes were given for fok the nature hike one went to lanae barrus and bonnie hammond of grantsville Grants ville and the other one went to the happy seven gang of too ele winners in the quiz contest on the united states flag were ross bell colleen white carol jean williams elizabeth bingham and norma hector of tooele thoele dale and 1 orralee castagno of erda and lois durfee and kerma watson of grantsville Grants ville the dean clean camp award had to be given to three camps the livestock club the erda club and a camp of i tooele thoele girls from various clubs |
