he ile was a son of H enry and emma broomhead green his parents after embracing the gospel left yorkshire england and came to utah in about the year IS 18 48 grandpa grandpas s mother at this time was a young girl of about 10 years of age and his father was mar ned ried to her aunt when emma broomhead became 17 it was de aided that henry green should marry her so that she would not leave them granny green as hen rys first wife later came to be known relinquished all hold on henry and emma took over as the head of the houseold ho out at of this union came nine children and ted edward green was about in the middle they moved around to var ious places in tooele thoele city and the fall of 1868 found them living next to charles herman horman jr charles hor mans daughter annie was just two and I 1 can remember grandpa telling of his first impression of the girl he later married he used to say I 1 loved her from that day on lived by him a short time and then moved away grand ma says she doesn doean t remember him until just three years before he married her at his best he stood well over six feet and weighed more than pounds grandma says he had brown curly hair when he was young but by the time I 1 had met him his hair was nearly white nevertheless less it was still curly grandpa was a large man well built and his health was the best hard work never bothered him tor for he did it all his life and he was one that could never be idle he spent his boyhood and youth help ing his father farm the land on w which the 3 C penney store al len lens s cash grocery and cornets stand today married in 1886 about the time grandpa was 20 he began earnestly to seek a wife he was a dashing young man with an air of cordial ty about him that made all the girls stop and look twice and think what a husband he would make annie herman horman was among these girls ted kemem bared her from the t me that she had been his next door neighbor she was a nice looking girl and ted began to take her home from the dances and then he got to dropping around sunday after grandma found herself looking for him and when he pro posed annie was willing to marry him they were married on decem ber 30 1886 at the horman home by U S gowans after the wed ding a dance was held at the hor man home at this party grandma and grandpa received many won darful gifts of which grandma still has a good many and they are now about 60 years old after the young couple were married they spent the largest part of the next two years in too ele while they were living in too ele eie their first child was born it was a boy and they named him edward after his father he was aborn born on march 20 1888 soon aft er they moved to grantsville Grants ville where they lived for eighteen months moved to granger in 1890 in the fall of the year 1890 they moved to granger while they hv liv ed there their oldest daughter was born she was named margaret aft er her mothers mother s half sister grand pa liked it quite well in granger and was planning on staying when he received word that his father w was as very sick he left his family and went back to tooele thoele his fath er got better but his health was too poor for him to attempt to do his own farming so he asked ted to move back and do it for him ted said all right and in the spring of 1891 he moved his fam ily back grandpa took care of his father fathers s farm for two or three years his father died in the fall of 1891 and was buried in tooele thoele in the fall of 1882 ada blanch was born and in 1894 charles was bom born they were were particularly proud of him because he was born on their ath wedding anniversary homestead on 3 mile creek they lived in tooele thoele for two vernal johnson spent the week end visiting his mother mrs maud johnson at deseret utah more years but during ur ng this time grandpa s oldest b brother other harry kept begging him to come a and aad ad live in grantsville Grants ville so early in 1896 grandpa took up a homestead near the three mile creek northeast of grantsville Grants ville built a log cabin and boned his family down in dec dee ember 1896 parley was born they lived there for seven years bare ly eking out an existence and dur ing this time three thre more emore sons were born clyde francis and george francis died in 6 days while they were living on the bottoms grandpa recalls many times when he worked for 1 and 1 50 a day it was all that he could do to keep his family clothed and fed when bishop james L offered him a chance to take over his box elder ranch grandpa jumped at the opportunity they lived on the ranch during the summer but each fall they had to move back so that the kids could go to school school was held in the old acad emy now known as poverty flats and never a day passed that there wasn gasn t a struggle to get the kids to go to school but they got there finally bought home in 1904 grandpa bought the house where we now live he bought it from bishop james L the house was only one log room with a lean to in the back the family lived in this many years before they could add to it in 1905 lawrence the youngest son was born it was soon after affer this that grand ma began to suffer with gallstones and she and grandpa spent many sleepless nights before she was op aerated on dr J A phipps had just moved into bobele tooele county to set up his doctor doctors s office and he was cal led in on the case in february 1911 he operated on grandma she was very sick but got over it and wasI was taking hold of things when grandpa was stricken with a pain in his side it turned out to be appendicitis and grandpa ended up in the hospital under dr phipps knife dr phipps saved grandpa grandpas s appendix for a long time because it was the biggest one he had ever seen of course the stout hearted fam ily had to have all the diseases that came along chicken pox measles small pox diphtheria and not to be exclude ed typhoid fever family gets typhoid 10 in november of 1910 the got typhoid fever margaret very sick and although the was called in there seemed to be no relief for the suffering girl but death death s cold hand ended her suffering and she was laid to rest on her birthday in the family plot at the grantsville Grants ville cemetery ada blanch and lawrence were both sick at the same time but they got better the fever affected blanch s heart and she had to be very careful from that time timp on it was about this time that grandpa decided to take a con tract to carry the mail maal between grantsville Grants ville and tooele thoele in those days it was rather a tedious job for they didn dian t have the good roads of today and the car was heard of but not believed in to carry the mail between the two cities meant having a team of horses and a sleigh or wagon each got used in its turn carried mail to tooele thoele along with the mail mall came pas ice ice cream and any thing else that could be loaded on a wagon during the time that grandpa delivered the mail mall the family lived part of the time in tooele thoele in one place and another and rented the home in grantsville Grants ville to the oldest son eddie grandpa has the distinction of buying the first automobile to carry mail on the route from tooele thoele to grantsville Grants ville biggest part of the time it wouldn t run and then the horses were called upon to bring it home nevertheless every time a new automobile came out grand pa had to have one these kept getting more and more costly in upkeep and cost price and the pro fits of the mail mall route were less and less gosh you carl cant t make a living ining driving the mail stage he said so he quit in 1926 it was soon after this that the route was changed and the mail mall came directly from salt lake to grantsville Grants ville the family had moved back to grantsville Grants ville during this time most of the sons were married and their daughter blanch was married and had two small children grandpa was still interested in mining log ging etc and was always trying out some new idea in the spring of 1930 blanch s heart began to get worse and the doctor said that she didn dian t have too much longer on this earth she died in june of the same year grandpa and grand ma took the daughter and son home to live with them worked for city county grandpa worked for the city the county and almost anyone whom he could get a job jolt with he still had to have his cars and they changed from time to time in the late summer of 1934 parley and his family moved into the garage and made a home of it where they lived until his wife died in the win ter of 1937 grandpa worked with parley and helped him fix up the house about this time it became possible for the old folks to get a pension through the united states government and mr green retired to enjoy the rest of his life just working when he pleased concluded next week |
