Show GREAT MOMENTS IN H HISTORY the saga of george washington and the cherry tree begins some or more years ago when geo rge was just a sprout on his fath er s bean farm in virginia virginia you know was one of the original 13 colonies and has been famous ever since for its old colony As it so happened the washing ton estate covered covi ered quite a few acres and in those acres was a fine cherry tree which george s father had become quite attached attached to he had come to love the old tree for when mrs washington caught him coming in late at night after a hard evening with the boys she would take after him and he al ways ran and climbed to the top of this cherry tree there to stay while there he found that he could nibble at the luscious fruit on the tree accurately shooting the pits at his wife below little george was all boy when he got a gift for christmas it was always some thing construe con tive he got a hammer and built things a book of arithmetic with which to learn surveying and a trowel so he could get plastered like his dad one christmas he got a hatchet and a sharp little hat chet it was too he d tried it out cutting wood for the fire and on his mothers furniture but he still gasn wasn t satisfied so he thought he would test its keenness on a tree hastening outside he spied the big Moss blossoming oming cherry tree and said to himself ha this it it then with a fiendish cry he began to whack away at it big chips fly ing in all directions for several minutes he flailed away at the shuddering tree then as it began to lean toward the ground he shouted TIMBER and down she came with a crash george looked around noticed his father crawling out from under the boughs and said oh im I 1 m a bad boy come into the thin house with me son said george s father I 1 will teach you alesson george followed pop into the wagging his tail behind him or rather his hatchet when they got into the kitchen father said now georgie tel me who cut down that cherry tree then came the words which have been een an expression of honesty ever since said george I 1 cannot tell a lie pop I 1 did it WHAT roared father what do you mean popeye did it ita popeye chasn t even been drawn yet no body knows about popeye yet lie to me will you take that and that and that and so say ing mr washington jerked a slat off the baby s cradle and thorough ly IY paddled little george in the vie vic anity of his caboose many years later george be came a man a successful surveyor entered the army and became head of the revolutionary forces after the war was won he became our first president but even after all those years the great george washington did not forget the lesson his father staught taught him in fact he thought of I 1 it every time he sat down mr and mrs leo bevan and fama fam ily accompanied by mrs fred kirk mother of mrs bevan left last fri fn day for a trip to california they will visit in san francisco with mr and mrs wallace allred and family and mr floyd bevan their brother in san mateo mr and mrs S L gillette left during the fore part of the week for a ten day business and vaca tion trip to el centre centro and arcadia california they will be guests of their parents mr and mrs john J gillette and other relatives and friends |
