Show field stream 11 by vemon vernon W shields we have apen log los ng rig some of our geese which have been winter ing in the vicin ty tv of timpie springs last week ray hammond of grantsville Grants ville received word from mr and mrs who oper of ftp n i serece ce station near timpie advising him that something was wrong with our canadian honkers in that area reported that one whole flock of geese were 1 to fly and that several were dearl mr hammond immediately contacted roy garrard who lost no t me in aptt ng rig down there to avest rite r ite mr garrard assisted bv glen hevland found several ded rie id geesa but were unable to f nd any ck ones that could not f v brout broucht lit back two of the dead ones orles and the carcasses will be sent to salt lake where they will be analyzed by state and fed eral officials to determine the cluse cause of their death I 1 examined both of the geese and found that they opre nothing but feathers and bone hardly any flesh on them at all the upper part of their legs was only as it b g around as your index finger these geese should I 1 have we ched between ten and fifteen pounds but instead b barely arely tipped the scales at six pounds the federal fish and wild life ser vice advises me that they have not been having any loss of geese in other parts of the state they were quite concerned about the situa tion here and promised a complete investigation I 1 understand that th the e I 1 local 10 cal f fire 11 re men and lions club really the jack rabb ts on their re cent hunt near vernon I 1 also und ersland and I 1 have it from good authority that certain members rs of one or poth doth of these organizations hunted on the state game preserve south of vernon how come comee I 1 would like to know A game pre serve means just what it says firearms rearms i are prohibited and to in my y knowledge belonging to the lions club or the firemen does not en itle title a person to carry firearms on a preserve it if you or I 1 were caught packing a gun in this territory we would be arrested and fined at least fifty dollars I 1 do not say that all the firemen and lions hunted on the preserve but a few of them did and it is that certain few that has given both organic allons a black eye in my opinion it was a disgusting display of poor sportsmanship I 1 agree that too much of tooele thoele county is set aside as game preserve but it was done for the benefit of the sportsmen amen servel and by violating the game pr preserve laws lanns the sportsmen are only hurt mg themselves they are not hurt ing the fish and game depart ment if the sportsmen of this county wish to change some of theste preserves it can be done by roper proper action however in this par nicular area a game preserve was declared in order to protect our sage hens I 1 have discussed the matter with mr garrard and he informed me that if he d seen these fellows on an the preserve he would have arrested each and every one regardless of who they were may be oe no harm was done but the fact remains that the law applies to every one and not just a certain few to date seven banded crows have been taken in the crow der by all of them fine buck birds only one magpie has aas been shot seventy seven crows and forty four magpies have been banded and are all worth at least five dollars each A second load of elk were trans planted by the utah fish and game department this week a game department spokesman said today I 1 the shipment contained nine neau head which makes nineteen head taken for the season eason the elk were caught in the Sari and mona traps planting was done in regions where there is little chance that elk will conflict with private land interests in the future the game department keman pointed out the severe cold wave which hit the intermountain intel mountain country last week put an extra burden on the big game animals and game birds according to fish and game diorec tor ross leonard hardest hit by the chill winds and the drifts have been the quail the game leader pointed out feed being covered by solid ice and hard pack drift snow the state has also received num erous calls about the condition of the waterfowl during the cold spell the open water being ex limited and food condition for ducks and g geese eese being critical the state mr leonard said will attempt to aid in the up land bird situation but feeding the migra tory waterfowl has not proven sue suc by game departments which have tired it feeding the birds tends to encourage their stay in the cold climates which is often worse than if the cold drove them into the open water areas mr leonard urged housewives farmers and sportsmen to feed the upland birds whenever and where ever possible crumbs gram and duets are good feed the director said these should be placed on the down wind sides so that the birds can get at them before they are drifted in he also urged control of house cats and stray cats during the freezing weather |
