arrived in port land at night and remained aboard the boat until morning we spent several days visiting the alaska exposition I 1 spent one sum mer in oregon with a surveying party we surveyed a R R were in session in 1917 1 I was president of the utah rexall club and received an invitation to go to boston to at tend a convention of the dents and secretaries of the van vari ous clubs of the U S california and vis cited a number of places of interest including catalina island about 22 miles out in the pacific ocean from long beach here they have the glass bottom boats so you can see the fish and marine growth in the ocean all colors and varieties of fish made a visit to la braya where the tar pits are located here is one of the freaks of nature ponds of tar these have been in ex istance for thousands of years and have been a trap for all kinds I 1 of I 1 ving creatures down through the ages any living creature that has fallen into these tar pits has been preserved by this liquid and they have been able to recover many specimens of animal life dinosaurs and many specimens of animals are made by sculptors and placed around the grounds many of these specimens can be seen in the art museum in los angeles another place of interest is the in los angeles where lectures are given in a dome shap ed building where you sit and list en to the lecture and look up at what appears to be the dome of heaven dotted by the stars and planets the lecturer points out the various planets gives their comparative size as compared with the earth and sun they also show the stars and planets as they
