Show Perser verance of tooele thoele J C s pays off with fine M municipal uni cipal airport in may 1945 the tooele thoele jr cham chain ber of commerce decided that too ele should have an airport A corn com cittee on aviation was selected and assigned the responsibility of carrying ta ams is project through to complete tion the committee con aisted of chairman E lavar tate mark J lindberg clyde J alien allen J herbert millburn and kay hansen the committee once organized swung into action with several months of pre planning and hinves ti gation the state director of was consulted and a num ber of surveys were made before a site for the proposed airport coulle be decided upon obtaining the ground was a big job for the own ers did not want to sell with lim im cited financial resources it was al most impossible to obtain a tittle to any suitable location tireless hours were spent writing letters making trips throughout the state before contracts were finally a greed upon in some ing instances oth er pieces of land had to be burch ased and traded for those of the airport site this portion of the project was completed january 2 1946 when the city of tooele thoele was given a clear title to acres of land on which the airport was built the first runway was made with equipment borrowed and begged from various sources the back breaking job of removing hundreds of truckloads of rocks was done by members of the tooele thoele jaycees trucks were furnished by club members when the first runway was completed the jaycees organ iced an aviation with fiete fifteen members fourteen being jaycees the aviation club purchased edthe the first plane ever to be based at too ele with possession po session of the plane it was necessary to build a hangar and again the jaycees spent their spare time at the airport until such was completed the planning was done by earl house and completed in august 1946 power water and phone service have since been ad ded the aviation committee met with the tooele thoele city council and through them the road was improve ed from ma n street to the airport one mile west in november the airport was in specter and found to be good enough to warrant a G I 1 flight school this school has been in op aeration since that time and 55 ex G Is I 1 s have enrolled for flight train ing S nce november the jaycees have made several improvements to aid aviation in tooele thoele wind socks have been installed at the airport and an emergency flood light has been placed on the hangar roof recently a large group of jaycees turned out to paint identification signs on the roof of tooele thoele s larg est store in the last few days they have helped and surveyed lay out plans for five new individual hang ars which will be started in the near future several times during the past year the entire membership ot of the tooele thoele jaycees has participated in the aviation project twelve mem mern bers have earned their pilot lie lic anses ind the jaycees have work ed to make it possible for 55 ex G Is I 1 s to receive flight training there is no way to estimate what this airport project will mean to tooele thoele in years to come certainly the benefit will be great and will grow as the use of aviation be come a more means of transportation and recreation to the general public A good project such as this ere ates a friendly feeling among the members in knowing that they have accomplished something of value to all such a feeling makes other projects aas er to accomplish the members of the aviation corn cittee and other members who worked hardest in putting the avia tion project over are always pres ent at the regular meetings and willingly take part in any project the aviation project was fidanc ed with money saved for this pur pose during the past several years the entire profits of the july 4 1946 celebration were ear marked for such a program A final check of was turned over to the avia tion committee and was used for add dional gravel to improve the runways the tooele thoele jr chamber of corn COM merce is proud of this project it has been and will always be a good thing for tooele thoele and her surround ing cities above all it is a good thing for the young yeung men of too ele it offers them an opportunity to participate in aviation A chance to learn to fly and to know avia avla tion as it affects the entire corn |
