Show PG 16-Under Team Wins 3-0 in Second Round Game of UBAL Playoffs by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings Vi-kings won 3-0 on the American Ameri-can Fork Cavemen's home diamond on July 23 during the second-round action of the Utah Baseball Academy League's post-season tournament tourna-ment for the 16-under division. divi-sion. Viking Coach Heath Stevenson Ste-venson said, "Aiden Newanswander Newan-swander threw a lot of strikes, keeping them from making a lot of hits." For the Cavemen, the loss was a shocker. A highly successful suc-cessful regular season had given the impression that they would reach the championship game like they did last summer. sum-mer. With memories of American Ameri-can Fork clobbering them in both games of a double-header last summer, the Vikings rowed over to the Cavemen's field with something to prove to their cross-valley rivals. In the top of the first, pitcher Sean Hardman walked Rylan Peterson. A Ty Stevenson Steven-son single moved Peterson into scoring position. A Luke Kaesmeyer sacrifice fly scored Peterson. Although the Cavemen Cave-men held the Vikings scoreless score-less during the next three innings, in-nings, American Fork became plagued with a problem of leaving men on base practically practical-ly every inning. In the fourth, American Fork finally got its first hit when Hardman singled into right. After Newanswander Newanswan-der had walked Zac Willis, a Milo Abbott sacrifice fly moved the two Cavemen into scoring position. After Koy Dib had grounded out to Peyton Pey-ton Simpson, Newanswander struck out Skyler Mounteer. In the top of the fifth, McKay Lewis doubled into left, and he soon came home on Ty Stevenson's two-out double. On one out in the sixth's top half, Jameo Carr doubled in Newanswander. Suddenly, Simpson hit into a double play. It ended the Viking Vi-king scoring for the morning. In the bottom of the sixth, one-out singles from Hardman and Willis gave American Fork hope for coming back. However, How-ever, Newanswander struck out Abbott and Dibb before the Cavemen could go on a rally. In the bottom of the seventh, sev-enth, they received another good chance of coming back when Mounteer and Austin Pitcher each slugged a single. sin-gle. However, the Cavemen's cause collapsed when Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove nailed Pitcher in a fielder's choice play at second, ending the game. |
