Viking Coach Heath Stevenson said, "We had great pitching from the three guys we had put on the mound tonight: Bryce Jones, Colson Rich, and Chandler Bice. We had some great hits, especially in the first inning." In the top of the first, Jones grounded out Jake Van Ammin. After third baseman Aiden Newanswander had grounded out Anj Birrgeos, Jones struck out Ryan Clark to hold the Eagles scoreless. The bottom of the first opened with Bradyn Cox singling into right. Cox tried scoring on a Ty Stevenson double slugged into right, but catcher Jake Debecki tagged him at the plate. Jones doubled in Stevenson, and as soon as McKay Lewis had joined the Viking pitcher on base, Newanswander doubled them in to improve the lead at 3-- 0. In the top of the second, second baseman Lewis grounded out Griffin Clayton and Abe Yaggi. Suddenly, Sam Ericson singled off Jones, and the Eagles looked as though they would be getting onto the scoreboard, especially when Danny Stevens got on base via a walk. However, Lewis tagged Stevens in a fielder's choice play. In the bottom of the second, Luke Kaesmeyer doubled in Peyton Simpson, but got tagged at third while trying to turn his hit into a double. Skyline didn't let the Vikings make another run until the bottom of the third. In the top of it, Jones fanned two batters and caused Dimitri Sachyllar to fly out to right fielder Jameo Carr. Loading the bases in the bottom of the third, Ty Stevenson slugged a hit that should have been a triple, but he got called out, for he did not touch first base while on his way to third. Nevertheless, the Vikings soon loaded the bases, however, and they scored two runs on a walk and error. In the fourth's top half, Birrgeos singled into left, and Clark doubled him in. That was the only RBI the Vikings let the Eagles have. After the fourth, Pleasant Grove didn't let Skyline make any hits. In the bottom of the fourth, Easton Walker singled to third, and he came home on a Cox triple. A Ty Stevenson sacrifice-fl-scored Cox. Doubling into center during the start of the fifth's lower half, Carr soon came home on a Brody Blackhurst single. After Skyline had pinched Blackhurst Viking 17-Und- er Squad Drops Home Game to Layton Lancers In UBAL Play by Dean Von Memmott In a Utah Baseball Academy League game for the er division at Viking Field on July 18, the Layton Lancers defeated the Pleasant Grove Vikings 9-- 8. Layton scored a run in the top of the first, but the Vikings answered with a four-ru-n rally in the bottom of the inning. A lightning storm interrupted the game in the top of the second. Play could not be renewed until 45 minutes after the storm had passed. When the action renewed, the Lancers played with a strong desire to keep the game from becoming a repeat the loss that Pleasant Grove had dealt them at Viking Field during last month's preseason tournament. On two outs in the top of the second, Layton's Weston Hyde singled in Jaden Trujillo. Shortstop Braden King grounded out Frankie Aguilar to keep the Lancers from catching up in the second. Pitcher Kaleb Harper held the Vikings scoreless in both the second and third innings. Those two rounds proved to be the turning point in the game. During the top of the third, a Logan Greenhaulgh single resulted in Layton loading the bases on no outs. Greenhaulgh soon stole home, touching off a six-ru- n rally, powered by singles from Cody Moss, Quinton Marcellin, and Dexter Piaz. Pleasant Grove attempted to make a comeback on singles from Braden King and Jake Barnhart, but shortstop Aguilar turned up a double play. In the fourth, a Moss sacrifice fly scored Marcellin. That turned out to be the last run that Pleasant Grove let the Lancers make. In the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings sought to a make a comeback. Doubling into right during the inning's lower half, McKay Lewis soon came home. Walked by Harper, Parker Bullock scored on an error. A tough Lancer defense in the .fifth kept the Vikings from capitalizing on an Easton Walker single hit into left. On one out in the bottom of the sixth, Rylan Peterson doubled in Micah Merrill and Zac "Fighting Chicken" Hicken, putting the Vikings within 9-- 8. However, the Lancers didn't let Pleasant Grove go on a long rally like it had done in the first. PG Reds Win Timp Colt League Tournament by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Reds won the Timp Colt League Tournament last week. The Reds were supposed to have played the American Fork Cubs in the championship round. However, the American Fork team forfeited the championship game, which was to have been played at Pleasant Grove's Discovery Park on July 21. Showing up for the forfeited game, the Reds received awards for their winning the league's post-seaso- n by default. Red Coach Eric Jensen said, "In the two games we played at Discovery last night July 20, we defeated the PG Cardinals 11-- 4 and Herriman 5-- 4. In the game against the Cardinals, the score was tied at 4-- 4 in the fifth when we made seven runs. In the Herriman game, we had Jesse De St. Jour and Cade Wilkes pitch. Cade hit a two-ru- n triple that tied it at four, and then he raced home for the winning run." In TCL action at American Fork's Rotary Park on July 19, the Pleasant Grove Cardinals defeated the Pleasant Grove Dodgers 12-- 5, and the Reds eliminated the American Fork Yankees 20-- 8. Spurred on by a Branson Carter double and a Jeb Smith triple, the . Cardinals pulled 7-- 0 in the top of the first. The bottom of it did see Bronson Lewis and Sam Norton each score a run for the Dodgers. The score stayed at 7-- 2 until the top of the third. The Cardinals tacked on three runs that inning. In the bottom of the third, Bronson Lewis singled in a run on two outs. Dave Stevens homered him to cut the lead to 10-- 5. In the fourth, Brendan Ivie and Smith each hit a one-ru- n triple to give the Cardinals a 12-- 5 lead. They then held the Dodgers scoreless for the rest of the game. In the other July 19 game at Rotary, the Reds posted a 5-- 0 during the first inning's top half through singles hit by Jared Jensen and Tee Hatch. In the bottom of the first, Pleasant Grove kept American Fork from capitalizing on Colton Hale's one-o- ut single. Holding the Reds scoreless in the top of the second, American Fork got a triple from Todd Healey. Adam Tate singled him in, only to get forced out at second. Doubling into left during the top of the third, Connor Albrecht came home on a Hatch single. As soon as Braxon Jex had hit a left-fiel- d double in the bottom of the third, Healey tripled him in to start a five-ru- n rally which tied the game at six. In the fourth, a Taylor Allred sacrifice groundout scored De St. Jour, and Albrecht singled in a run to improve the Red lead at 8-- 6. Doubling in the bottom of the fourth, Tate soon came home on a Carson Buckner single. Hale knocked in Bucker to the game at eight. American Fork soon loaded the bases on two outs. Healey came up to bat at that point. Yankee fans anticipated that he would register a game-winnin- g RBI. However, he struck, and the game's outcome was decided until the top of the seventh. "That inning, we scored 12 runs," Eric Jensen recalled. "Everybody on the team got a hit that inning." PG 15 --Under Team Eliminates Skyline 1 1 -- 1 InUBAL PlayoffAction by Dean Von Memmott In a second round game of the Utah Baseball Academy League's er division playoffs on July 21, the Pleasant Grove Vikings defeated the Skyline Eagles 11-- 1. In the top of the first, Ryan Wiscombe hit a one-ru- n single for the only Eagle run of the night. Viking Coach Robert Simpson said, "We struggled in the first three innings before our bats came alive in the fourth. Spencer Romney gave us three great hits tonight. Jade Smoot kept them off balance with his pitching." Pleasant Grove pulled ahead 2-- 1 in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Romney doubled in three runs to set off a nine-ru- n rally that ended Skyline's season. During the rally, Luke Kaesmeyer and Peyton Simpson each hit a one-ru- n triple for the Vikings. PG Vikings Win UBAL's 15-Und- er Division State Championship Miner in a fielder's choice play at third. The Miners got singles Plaga and Cody Kitchen in the fifth, but the Vikings kept them from going on a scoring rally. On one out in the fourth, May doubled in Spencer Rom-ney. Although Bingham didn't let the Vikings make any more runs that inning, the game took a lopsided turn in the fifth. In the bottom of it, pitcher Zupan beaned Peyton Simpson and Bullock, setting off an eight-ru- n rally. During it, Peterson singled in two runs, then came home on a Romney triple. Dou-bling in Romney, May soon came home on an error. Anoth-er Bingham error let Cox make the winning run. Although the Bountiful Braves did make five hits off Pleasant Grove pitchers in the championship game, they still couldn't make any runs. The Vikings destroyed them 11-- 0. Hitting a two-o- ut single in the bottom of the first, Black hurst came home on a Simp-son single. On two outs in the second, Cox singled in May to set off a five-ru- n rally that saw Luke Kaesmeyer triple in two runs and score on a Blackhurst single. In the third, Romney tripled in Gavin "Grizzly" Bahr, then came home on a May sin-gle. With teammates Ryan Stringfellow and Brayden Muir having singled in the first and third innings respectively, the Braves banked their hopes on Stringfellow and Jake Fos-ter's fourth-innin- g singles to keep Bountiful's championship hopes alive past the fifth. The fourth's top half ended with Pleasant Grove turning up a double play before the Braves could score. In the bottom of the fourth, Blackhurst doubled in two runs, then came home on a Simpson single, improving the lead at 1 0. Brave Spencer Vincent singled on one out in the fifth, but got stuck on base. by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings took state in the Utah Baseball Academy League's er division during post-seaso- n ac-tion occurring during the recent Pioneer Day week. The Vikings had won all four of their playoff games at home. After having crushed the Skyline Eagles (see related sto-ry) in July 21 action, Pleasant Grove came out with an 11-1- 0 win over the Riverton Silver-wolv- es on July 22. Going into the bottom of the July 22 game's sixth inning, the Vikings found the Silver-wolv- es leading them 10-- 7. Bra-dyn Cox hit a three-ru- n homer to tie the game at 10. Hitting a double, Jade Smoot soon stole home to give the Vikings their quarterfinal win. The first four innings of the July 23 semifinal saw Pleas-ant Grove play a tight game against the Bingham Miners, having a rich baseball tradition of their own. The game opened with Miner Kade Cloward singling off Zac Peterson. After Peter-son grounded out Nick Plaga, the Vikings belted the Miners with a double play. On two outs, Brody Black-hurst doubled in Luke Kaes-meyer in the bottom of the first. A two-ou- t, Chandler May single reeled in Logan Bullock in the bottom of the second. Bingham got onto the scoreboard in the top of the third. Hitting his second single off Peterson, Cloward came home on a Plaga double. Hit into right field, a Tyler Zupan single moved Plaga to third. Plaga became stranded there as he watched Pleasant Grove nail Zupan in a hot box play and Will Anderson struck out. In the top of the fourth, Brayden Diddle singled off Peterson during one out, but Pleasant Grove soon bagged the PG 16-Und- er Team Wins 3-- 0 in Second Round Game of UBAL Playoffs by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vi-kings won 3-- 0 on the Ameri-can Fork Cavemen's home diamond on July 23 during the second-roun- d action of the Utah Baseball Academy League's post-seaso- n tourna-ment for the er divi-sion. Viking Coach Heath Ste-venson said, "Aiden Newan-swander threw a lot of strikes, keeping them from making a lot of hits." For the Cavemen, the loss was a shocker. A highly suc-cessful regular season had given the impression that they would reach the championship game like they did last sum-mer. With memories of Ameri-can Fork clobbering them in both games of a double-heade- r last summer, the Vikings rowed over to the Cavemen's field with something to prove to their cross-valle- y rivals. In the top of the first, pitcher Sean Hardman walked Rylan Peterson. A Ty Steven-son single moved Peterson into scoring position. A Luke Kaesmeyer sacrifice fly scored Peterson. Although the Cave-men held the Vikings score-less during the next three in-nings, American Fork became plagued with a problem of leaving men on base practical-ly every inning. In the fourth, American Fork finally got its first hit when Hardman singled into right. After Newanswan-der had walked Zac Willis, a Milo Abbott sacrifice fly moved the two Cavemen into scoring position. After Koy Dib had grounded out to Pey-ton Simpson, Newanswander struck out Skyler Mounteer. In the top of the fifth, McKay Lewis doubled into left, and he soon came home on Ty Stevenson's two-o- ut double. On one out in the sixth's top half, Jameo Carr doubled in Newanswander. Suddenly, Simpson hit into a double play. It ended the Vi-king scoring for the morning. In the bottom of the sixth, one-o- ut singles from Hardman and Willis gave American Fork hope for coming back. How-ever, Newanswander struck out Abbott and Dibb before the Cavemen could go on a rally. In the bottom of the sev-enth, they received another good chance of coming back when Mounteer and Austin Pitcher each slugged a sin-gle. However, the Cavemen's cause collapsed when Pleas-ant Grove nailed Pitcher in a fielder's choice play at second, ending the game. .. : Pictures tire fiOW AVAILABLE at: PicMyKid " - - .'iCTari 1 "Moments" continued from Page 2 sings along. But, I do remember being so proud the one time I drove my boyfriend's truck, which was stick shift, home to my house. That was the last time I drove one. Maybe one day I will learn again and be able to help him out. Sometimes there is not much scenery to look at which doesn't help the driving. But it is one way to know the land.
