Show Vikings End Three Game Series Against Brighton With 10-4 Win Over Bengals by Dean Von Memmott Even though the Brighton Bengals did thrash the Pleasant Grove Vikings thoroughly in the first two games of the two teams' Region 4 three-game series, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove demonstrated on April 15 that it could take down Brighton on any given day. On the Bengals' home field that day, the Vikings tamed the Bengals 0A. Viking Coach Darren Henry said, "Last Tuesday, Tyler Harmon Har-mon had trouble finding his strike zone when we played here. Today, though, he went for five and one-third one-third innings in throwing strikes that kept them from doing much against us." He continued, "When Harmon became tired in the sixth, we, had Cade Hooley relieve him. Cade became our key to closing out the game with a win for us. We've been working hard to come up with a win against Brighton. We were finally able to do that today. Brighton's Brigh-ton's a tough team to beat." The April 15 game started with Viking Riley Erickson hitting an infield in-field single. After right fielder Jon-ny Jon-ny Whipple had intercepted two fly balls, hit by Cort Iorg and Hooley, Erickson came home on a passed ball. With first baseman Gage Matuszak snaring a Broc Stan-fly Stan-fly ball, the Bengals proceeded to erase the first Viking lead. Walked by Harmon in the bottom of the first, Nick Marz moved to third on a Matuszak single hit into left. K.J. Burrola singled Marz in only to become caught in a double play turned up by third baseman Payton Peters. The next inning's top half, Josh Scoresby smacked a one-out single into left Before the Vikings could capitalize on Scoresby's hit, he became be-came stranded at first through two straight pop-outs. Walked by Harmon Har-mon in the bottom of the second, Ian Fchlauer stole his way around to third. Leadoff Bengal batter Cole Butcher singled Fchlauer in to chop the 1-1 tie to pieces. The Bengals' 2-1 lead didn't survive the third inning. It opened with Shaun Jacobson hitting a tying, ty-ing, solo homer over the left field fence. That home run stirred up memories of Starr whacking a solo homer in the 14-4 thumping that the Bengals had dealt to Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove in their April 1 2 game. Spurred on by Jacobson's homer, Harmon held the Bengals scoreless during the third, fourth, and fifth innings. in-nings. Harmon's pitching set the stage for the Vikings retaking the lead. The top of die fourth opened on a sour note for Pleasant Grove. First, Whipple intercepted a Harmon fly ball, and Scoresby grounded out to second baseman Chase Howell. Singles from Peters Pe-ters and Ryland Peterson revived the Vikings' chances of scoring scor-ing fourth inning runs. Erickson doubled those two Vikings to tip Pleasant Grove back ahead 4-2. Even though left fielder Fchlauer snatched an Iorg fly ball, the Bengals Ben-gals could not undo the damage done by Erickson's two-run double. dou-ble. Hitting a fifth inning single into left, Hooley came home on a Starr single. After Harmon had flown out to center, Scoresby hit into a double dou-ble play. It did not hurt Pleasant Grove in the long run, for in the top of the sixth, Erickson doubled in one run and Iorg two, fueling a five-run rally. In the bottom of the sixth, Harmon became tired on the mound, giving up three straight singles that loaded the bases. Brighton then picked up two runs on a Fehlaucr single and a Zane Smith. Hooley relieved Harmon at the mound and held the Bengals Ben-gals scoreless through the rest of the game, despite a seventh inning single from Matuszak. |
