Bengals Win Game Two of Series V;; r"-"- - "' I t r . v3$; Kent Allen The Brighton Bengals came to town on Wednesday evening and had batting practice using the Vikings to go shag the balls. The Bengals scored 14 runs on 14 hits with two errors. The Vi-kings scored four runs on five hits and three errors. Brock Starr kept the Vi-kings alive for an extra inning as he cranked a solo home run out of the park in the fifth inning, but we went three and out in the bottom of the sixth to give the win to Brighton. The Viking offense was pretty quiet during the game, but not because they didn't try. Brighton's winning pitcher Chris Conran did a good job on the mound and let his team-mates play defense and that shut down Coach Henry's machine. Mr. Conran's fast ball av-eraged 83 mph as shared with me by a professional scout from the Chicago Cubs or-ganization that was in atten-dance at the game. Several fans also made statements saying that the Bengals could beat Lone Peak if they play them the way they played us today. Brighton currently sits in second place in Region 4 with a record of 4-- 1 in region and 9-- 3 overall. The Vikings are in 6th place in region with a 2-- 6 in region and 6-- 9 win-los- s overall. The Vikings travel back to Brighton High School to play game three of the se-ries on Friday, April 15. Next week, Pleasant Grove faces American Fork High School with Jordan High School to follow the week after. Camera captures the moment a Brighton fastball slams into the back of Cade Hooley. Pholos courtesy of Timpanogos Times by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings split two Softball games during last week's Spring Break. At home on April 11, the Vikings crushed American Fork 19-- 0. However, in a road game at West Jordan on April 13, the West Jordan Jaguars shut out Pleasant Grove 10-- 0. In the American Fork game, . Viking pitcher Angie Mikalauski threw a nohitter. In the top of the first, she walked Lexi Morris and Nia Harper, but both of those American Fork girls got stuck on base. In the bottom of the first, Mikalauski hit a two-ru- n homer that fired up' a 10-ru- n rally. In the next inning, Robyn Jeserick hit a three-ru- n double during a nine-ru- n stampede that brought the Vikings an early victory. The game got called after the top of the third. Viking Coach Jim Clark said, "American Fork's a really young team. So they struggled against us. Our girls put in some good swings. Angie's home run got us really going. Chicks dig long balls. We were supposed to play at AF today, but their coach told me at 10 this morning that their diamond was too muddy to play on. So we moved the game here." Pleasant Grove did get some hits in its six inning game at West Jordan on April 13. Posting five strikeouts, Jaguar pitcher Breanna Ordinway did not let the Vikings make another hit until the fourth. In the bottom of the first, Mikalauski struck out Ordinway and made Becky Ballard fly out into left. Brea Buckley hom-ered off Mikalauski, but the Vi-king pitcher kept the Jaguar lead stuck at until the bottom of the third. On one out that inning, Jag-uar Markke Ashton hit a one-ru- n double that set off a five-ru- n ral-l- y. In the fourth's top half, Lexi Schoonover singled off Ordinway, but got put out at sec-ond. On two outs, Jentri White singled into left, but the Jaguars kept her stuck on base through right fielder Kayla Baird's catching a Regan Weber fly ball. During the bottom of the fourth, the Jaguars improved their lead at 8-- 0 through one-singl- es hit by Annie Oliver and Chelsea Bills. In the sixth, Viking Jo-se- y Walker singled on one out, giving Pleasant Grove a final chance for scoring. However, after she got put out at second, West Jordan proceeded to end the game that inning. After Lyndsey Drake and Ashton had singled off Mikalauski, a Viking error let West Jordan pick up a run. Kenzie Culligan delivered the knockout blow by singling in Drake for the game ending run. Vikings End Three Game Series Against Brighton With 10-- 4 Win Over Bengals by Dean Von Memmott Even though the Brighton Bengals did thrash the Pleasant Grove Vikings thoroughly in the first two games of the two teams' Region 4 three-gam- e series, Pleas-ant Grove demonstrated on April 15 that it could take down Brighton on any given day. On the Bengals' home field that day, the Vikings tamed the Bengals 0A. Viking Coach Darren Henry said, "Last Tuesday, Tyler Har-mon had trouble finding his strike zone when we played here. Today, though, he went for five and one-thir- d innings in throwing strikes that kept them from doing much against us." He continued, "When Harmon became tired in the sixth, we, had Cade Hooley relieve him. Cade became our key to closing out the game with a win for us. We've been working hard to come up with a win against Brighton. We were finally able to do that today. Brigh-ton's a tough team to beat." The April 15 game started with Viking Riley Erickson hitting an in-field single. After right fielder Jon-n- y Whipple had intercepted two fly balls, hit by Cort Iorg and Hooley, Erickson came home on a passed ball. With first baseman Gage Matuszak snaring a Broc Stan-fl-ball, the Bengals proceeded to erase the first Viking lead. Walked by Harmon in the bottom of the first, Nick Marz moved to third on a Matuszak single hit into left. K.J. Burrola singled Marz in only to become caught in a double play turned up by third baseman Payton Peters. The next inning's top half, Josh Scoresby smacked a one-o- ut single into left Before the Vikings could capitalize on Scoresby's hit, he be-came stranded at first through two straight pop-out- s. Walked by Har-mon in the bottom of the second, Ian Fchlauer stole his way around to third. Leadoff Bengal batter Cole Butcher singled Fchlauer in to chop the tie to pieces. The Bengals' 2-- 1 lead didn't survive the third inning. It opened with Shaun Jacobson hitting a ty-ing, solo homer over the left field fence. That home run stirred up memories of Starr whacking a solo homer in the 14-- 4 thumping that the Bengals had dealt to Pleas-ant Grove in their April 1 2 game. Spurred on by Jacobson's homer, Harmon held the Bengals scoreless during the third, fourth, and fifth in-nings. Harmon's pitching set the stage for the Vikings retaking the lead. The top of die fourth opened on a sour note for Pleasant Grove. First, Whipple intercepted a Harmon fly ball, and Scoresby grounded out to second baseman Chase Howell. Singles from Pe-ters and Ryland Peterson revived the Vikings' chances of scor-ing fourth inning runs. Erickson doubled those two Vikings to tip Pleasant Grove back ahead 4-- 2. Even though left fielder Fchlauer snatched an Iorg fly ball, the Ben-gals could not undo the damage done by Erickson's two-ru- n dou-ble. Hitting a fifth inning single into left, Hooley came home on a Starr single. After Harmon had flown out to center, Scoresby hit into a dou-ble play. It did not hurt Pleasant Grove in the long run, for in the top of the sixth, Erickson doubled in one run and Iorg two, fueling a five-ru- n rally. In the bottom of the sixth, Harmon became tired on the mound, giving up three straight singles that loaded the bases. Brighton then picked up two runs on a Fehlaucr single and a Zane Smith. Hooley relieved Harmon at the mound and held the Ben-gals scoreless through the rest of the game, despite a seventh inning single from Matuszak. f'l fV I aiflce 1942 1 -- nt 1 I j lilt IH'I hitl v-- v - '"' i i I v- - i j .... - - - .... - - - |
