Show San Juan Commissioner Opposes USU Study San Juan County Commis-sihner Commis-sihner Calvin Black I his week charged the Utah Slate University Uni-versity Institute for the Study Stu-dy of Outdoor Recreation and , Tourism with incompetency and wasting the taxpayer1;' money. lie made this charge as a result of the composition of a so called "quoslionaira" recently sent to htilf of the households of Kane, Garfield, Wayne, Grand, and San Juan Counties concerning roads in Southern Utah and the reporting re-porting of the results therefrom. there-from. Commissioner Black said at the time the questionnire was sent he called Dr. John Hunt and objected to the questions as not being relative to the issue, that they were designed design-ed for programmed answers, which would be relative only to road priorities, would not give an indication of what total road system was desired desir-ed by the people, and that ihe results would tend to pit County against County and Community against Commun- ily which has been a major reason for lack of development develop-ment in Southern Utah in the Past. . Mr. Black said the way the questions were phrased would he like .asking a person if he would rather have his right arm or his left arm, if he could only have one! He said the questions were devised badly enough, but the reporting of (he results were even worse. Only 5 per cent of the people in Southern Utah opposed the roads, but. no one would ever guess thai those were the real results based on the press release and buHctin put out by the University. The Commissioner stated that the question (hat should be asked of the people of Southern Utah is: "Do ycu want the "Golden Circle" road system as planned by the State and Counties, or do you want only that small portion of it which is supported sup-ported by the exclusionist!-which exclusionist!-which they cull their "alternatives?" |
