Show Paria Canyon hike is tough but popular Not for the inexperienced, inexperienc-ed, unqualified, or casual Sunday walker is Bureau of Land Management-administered Paria Canyon. This backpackers' paradise para-dise can be reached via U.S. 89 out of Kanab, by taking the marked, but unpaved, 3 mile cut-off road to White House Ruin. All visitors are required to register before entering the canyon and turn in their registration permits upon exiting. This precaution is necessary to be sure all hikers exit the area safely. A backpacking trip through the 40-mile long canyon constitutes a tour through 200 million years of time. Geologists believe that this area alternated between sea, lake, and desert as the various formations of the canyon were laid down. Hiking can vary from gentle inclines to sheer drops requiring ropes, So hikers are advised to' caution while in canyon area.
