Show MEET THE PEOPLE WHO SERVE YOU FEATURING THIS WEEK MOAB READY MIX E:htcrn years of experience experi-ence in Hie concrete business has enabled Lloyd Thayn, owner of Hie Moab Ready Mix Company to become involved in-volved in most of the major construction in the Moab area. Although Mr. Thayn docs not coniract out the jobs himself, the contractors building in the area hire his S.rm to provide ready mix fcr construction projects. Mr. Thayne originally came to Moab to wcrk fcr Eastern East-ern Utah Development Company, Com-pany, from which he purchased purchas-ed his plant. A native of the iPri'ce area, he began working work-ing for the Price-based company com-pany and continued working for them for fourteen years. iLaiter, when the firm considered consid-ered goir.lg out of busi-rless, busi-rless, Mr. Thayn purchased it and began the job of expanding ex-panding the business into the major one which it is today. Three men are hired to man the four mixer trucks and to operate the loader, located locat-ed at the Site of the plant on Ncf.h H'ghway 163. One person per-son mans the loader which proportions out the correct amounts of sand, gravel, and water to mix concrete to meet the job specifications. All concrete is not mixed exactly the same, according- to Mr. Thayn. Proportions of the mix vary according' to the type of construction being done. Yards of concrete are mixed and delivered to th? site of the project, ready to be poured. As the major cement con tractor in southeastern Utah, iMoaib Ready Mix delivers to the LaSal and Lisbon Valley areas, as well as areas nortii of Moab. Lisbon Valley is the site of a second plant belong-lrg belong-lrg to Mr. Thayn which is operated . when business in that part of the area calls for maintenance of the plant. Business is slow at the present pres-ent time, remarked Mr. Thayn, who indicated that the amount of work done by the firm varies a 'great deal on the construction projects pre-velent pre-velent in the area. The firm, however, also serves the individual in-dividual in the community by delivering ready mix for use in construction of patios, driveways, or sidewalks at individual in-dividual homes which are constructed by the owner. At times it is all we can do to keep up with demands for ready mix which is to be delivered at construction sites. "These times," he said, "make up for ithe slower times when building is not as evident in the area." Aside from the ready mix concrete, the firm also can provide sand and gravel and will deliver them where specifically spe-cifically desired by the buyer. buy-er. Three different cement mixes are also available which can be purchased by the individual for his own use. Working for Mr. Thayn are Robert Stevenson and Bill M i.i'.ell, Who are usd as drivers in addition to himself, him-self, and his son, Leslie, who works as a batchler and runs the loader which mixes th? concrete to be put into the trucks. '. The Thayns like Moab, ac- j cording to Mr. Thayn, who I recently purchased a ne.v hcmle on Opal Street 'in the Emerald Subdivision. He re- , marked that he liked Moab j before moving here fifteen years ago, and that he still liWes the area. After settling here, he became aware of the market for ready mix and did his almost to provide fast, dependable service for tho people in the Moab and surrounding sur-rounding areas. ''I like the business, and have never been sorry that I have worked with this type of product," he said. Construe- i tion with concrete is here to stay, and it is interesting to see the finished projects once they have become part of the Moab businesses, homes, or establishments," he added. f . ! |
