Show i an ininiTiiinMftnr irwnmit nwwn r wimi urn Editor: !, j According to an advertisement adver-tisement published in the Salt Lake Tribune and the Denver Post of Sunday, May1 23, the great southwest south-west is to become an "Electric "El-ectric Environment." - It states that "the clean air, precious water, and the ancient landscapes of the Colorado Plateau and of the high desert are being sold out to supply electricity electri-city to the super cities-Los cities-Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, Tuc-son, and Las Vegas." The power plants already ini operation in this area are presently polluting the air and other planned power pow-er plants and those already in the construction stage will continue to add tons of tflyash, sulfur dioxide and oxide of nitrogen. Not only will the once clean air and water of this area become polluted and poisonous, but the beauty of the landscape will also suffer. One plant, at Fruitland, N.M., now emits over 300 tons of fly-ash fly-ash daily, 290 tone of sulfur sul-fur dioxide, and 220 tons of oxide of nitrogen per day. Combine this total with the forecasted emissions emis-sions of the other huge power plants in the Southwest, South-west, and it is frightening. frighten-ing. Also included in the advertisement ad-vertisement were other statements: "At the Lake Powell National Recreation Area, visited by more than one million people per year, the air will receive more sulfur dioxide than New York City, more flyash than Los Angeles and" oxides ox-ides of nitrogen comparable compara-ble to those emitted by a'l the autos in the city of Las Angeles. "These wastes are con-stdered con-stdered so dangerous that coal burning power plants are essentially banned in the Los Angeles basin. The tmy flyash particulates (sub micron in size) will .stay airborne for months and will travel hundreds of miles." We of this area in Southeastern South-eastern Utah are going to he affected and wo should become more aware of the problms 0f the fossil burning, burn-ing, power producing electrical elec-trical plants. "Boating on Lake Powell in the air of Loa Angeles." There are many ways to stop the increase of the plants and to keep our at and water for ourselves. I am a person who moved to this area from Centra: Utah and it is well worti the fight to save the envir- onment. Let's give it a good j& fight.
