Show Action on PWk Bills Halted in U. S. House Three bills which would have given National Park Hi al us lo Arches and Capitol Cap-itol Reef National Moiui-. 'mollis and enlarged Can-yonlands Can-yonlands National Park have died in committee in the House of Representatives Representa-tives after similar bills were passed in the Senate. Sen-ate. A letter received from Pernell Lewis, Kane County Coun-ty Commissioner; James V. Yardley, Garfield County Coun-ty Commissioner; Lloyd Hunt, Wayne County Commissioner; Com-missioner; Marion 11. Haz-leton, Haz-leton, San Juan County Commissioner and Prel R. Beyeler, Grand County Commissioner, played a large part in seeing that the bills did not make it out of the House Interior Committee, chairmaned by Colorado's Wayne Aspin-all. Aspin-all. The letter stated that the County Commissions which are represented by these men, as well as the overwhelming majority of the citizens in these Counties, Coun-ties, are opposed to the "excessive amount of laud involved to be separated from multiple use as approved ap-proved by the Senate." The letter continued to state that although the House bills would call for less acreage to be used a3 Parks, the Commissioners felt that more time should lie taken on these measures in this session of the Congress. Con-gress. Further recommendations recommen-dations of the Commissioners Commis-sioners included that the Bureau of Land Management, Manage-ment, National Park Service Ser-vice and a committee, appointed ap-pointed by the County Commissioners of the five counties involved meet to work out a plan to submit to the Congress that would develop the full scenic and recreational values of the areas with appropriate classifications and continue contin-ue multiple use wherever possible. Finally, the group asked that the Federal agencies involved be instructed to, consider the needs and interests of local and State government officials offic-ials and citizens and that they be involved in formulating for-mulating plans and proposals pro-posals and not just ratify or oppose the plans made wholly by agency personnel. |
