Show New Community Education Concept Being Started in Grand County Cuirrently in " Grand County, as in many other areas around the State, efforts ef-forts are being made to create a community education edu-cation program which will open up the public school buildings 24 hours a day, 52 weeks a year so that these facilities can be made available to all members mem-bers of the community, from the youngest child to the senior citizen. Coordinator for this project in Grand County is Russ Donoghue, who spoke briefly on the history his-tory of the program as it was instigated in Flint, Michigan, in 1935. Mr. Donoghue spoke to the Moab Rotary Club at regular reg-ular meeting Monday. With the depression taking tak-ing its slow toll of morale and morality; crime was on the upswing and children chil-dren were involved. Frank Manley, physical education and recreation supervisor in the Flint public schools had an idea: if the schools could be used after school and during the summer, they would provide excellent excel-lent recreation centers for thousands of Flint youngsters. young-sters. As Manley addressed a civic group about this idea one day, Charles Stewart Ste-wart Mott, then vice president pres-ident of GMC and president presi-dent of the 9 year old Mott Fjoundatioin, heard the talk. He was interested in the idea and offered $6,00 to underwrite a recreation recrea-tion program in five Flint schools. This began the work of making a total community human resource center out of what had before been just seven-hour-a-day buildings. New Concept The idea of community education differs from Adult Ad-ult Education or Continuing Contin-uing Education courses in that the former are interested inter-ested in completing for credit those classes necessary nec-essary for graduation, either ei-ther from high school, or from college. The Community Com-munity Education program or philosophy, on the other oth-er hand, is given for interest, in-terest, enjoyment, to better bet-ter skills, and just for hobbiests. Because of this, it is not required that certified teachers be used in the program. Volunteers Vol-unteers who are skilled in a certain area may just as easily fill the need for instructors. Currently, residents of Grand County have shown an interest in taking some of the following classes: beginning sewing, auto mechanics for women, cake decorating, rug weaving, wea-ving, archery, pistol and rifle shooting, home decorating, dec-orating, speed reading, landscaping, private pilot ground school, stock market, mar-ket, stretching the consumer consum-er dollar and income tax. |
