Show Senior Citizen center hearing set here on Wednesday, May 3 A public hearing has been scheduled for May 3 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the County Courthouse Court-house to receive public comment on a proposed grant application being submitted by Grand County. The grant application will be written to the Department of Housing Hous-ing and Urban Development for funds to construct a new senior "3ns center and to do residential renovation 'on the houses of the elderly and low income in the county. Grand County is being assisted in the preparation of this application by the Southeastern Utah Association of Governments. The Housing and Community Development Act of 1977 authorizes authoriz-es grants to units of general purpose government to carry out a wide range of community development develop-ment activities including senior citizen center construction and housing rehabilitation. Although there is no assurance that the application will be funded, public input and support are critical factors in the grant request process. pro-cess. The selection process of the Small Cities Program is heavily weighted towards those programs which have the greatest benefit' to low and moderate income persons. Utah State Division of Aging statistics indicate that there are 639 seniors in the county and 503, or 79 per cent of these, are living with incomes that place them below the poverty level. There are no matching requirements require-ments for this type of grant; however, local participation by local government and citizen organizations organiza-tions will enhance the counties chances for funding of the grant. The grant amount will probably probab-ly be for $275,000 of which $200,000 will be for the center and $75,000 for low-income senior housing renovation. |
