Show ip29 Looking Backward (M jtyXr Through the Files of jl L 'mes'nceenc'en j jiOr Grand Valley Times 10 Years Ago The dedication of new electronic instruments to be installed at the Can-yonlands Can-yonlands Airport took place Monday and was reported on in the weekly Chamber of Commerce meeting. Ground was broken for the installation of two lights which will be placed approximately 600 feet from each end of the runway. The lights are equipped with three different diff-erent colored beams; red, yellow and green. When a pilot is approaching the runway he will see one of the beams. If he sees the yellow one it will indicate that he is too high for landing properly. If he sees the red one, he is too low. The green signals the proper landing angle. 20 Years Ago Charles A. Steen, Mo-ab's Mo-ab's Uranium King, took a narrow margin victory over George A. Hurst, Jr., Blanding lumber man, in a race for Republican nominee for the state senate in the Primary election held last Tuesday. Tues-day. Mr. Steen's total Yi Grand, Emery and San Juan counties, which comprise com-prise the 12th senatorial district was 1473, while Mr. Hurst obtained 1415, Mr. Steen winning by a 58 vote majority. Grand county co-unty voted strongly for' Mr. Steen, giving him a total of 783 as compared to Mr. Hurst's 302. An almost evenly divided vote occurred in Emery county where Steen led in the unofficial count by only two votes. Emery county gave Steen 358 and Hurst 356. San Juan county, Mr. Hurst's home territory, favored the Blanding candidate can-didate in near the same proportion as Grand did Mr. Steen. Figures showed show-ed that Blanding voted heavily in favor of Mr. Hurst. Monticello gave a 10 vote majority to Steen. Several of the smaller voting districts also favored favor-ed the Grand county candidate. The total voting in San Juan county gave Steen 332 and Hurst 757. 40 Years Ago The first football game of the season for the Grand county high school squad will be played Saturday at Cortez, Colo., against the fast Cortez team. The contest is a feature of the Montezuma county fair, and the kickoff will take place at 10 a.m. Coach Glenn Merrill of the local school reports that his 1938 team has prospects of developing into a good outfit. While most of the boys are inexperienced, they are working hard and show real promise. About 25 youngsters turned out for grid practice last week. Dick Zufelt, star quarterback quarter-back on the 1937 team was elected captain. Following the Cortez game, the following grid contests have been scheduled: sche-duled: Sept. 24, Moab CCC; Sept. 30, Wasatch Academy nt Mt. The roads were already muddy as a result of previous showers, and Monday's rain filled all of the washes to overflowing and did considerable damage, especially to the Moab-Thompson road. |
