Show flags mil fly In response to the problems created by the loss of flags during the "Avenue of Flags" on Memorial Day 1974, the American Legion is ordering 20 three by five foot flags to be flown instead of the larger flags used to drape the caskets of deceased veterans and now held by survivors. While these smaller flags will not have the same individual sentimental value, they will none-the-less fly in honor of those who have served and have now passed on and just as surely as a reminder to those of us surviving that this is still the greatest country in the world - and will continue so, just as long as people care and constantly work toward making it better tomorrow than it is today. The use of the supplied smaller flags will not prohibit the placement and constant guarding of flags loaned by survivors. Preparation will be made to mount, fly and guard as many flags as are made available. Those who feel they want their own flag to fly in honor of their own veteran should contact Bill Green, Beulah Anderson, Leon Stocks, Mary Pogue or Mattie Garlett. Also the smaller flags are being procured at considerable expense. Anyone who appreciates this annual Memorial Day display and would like to contribute should call one of the above. It would be possible to purchase, at $7.30, a flag to fly in honor of a particular veteran or to contribute to the American Legion fund so that this activity can continue and can grow. |
