Udall dangles his feet (n the wafers of the Colorado river during the second leg of his inspection tour of proposed additions to Canyonlands NaticflaJ Park. The Udall expedition left Monday for a five- Udall Party Begins 2nd Phase of Area Visit Secretary of the Interior JTewart L. Udall left Moab Monday for the second leg of a two-week inspection tour of posible additions to Canyonlands National Park. This week's expedition by Udall's party consists of a combination white water river riv-er trip and hikes into nearly inaccessible side canyons. Udall and the 30 persons in his party are traveling down the Colorado this week in three rubber pontoon rafts, one 33 feet long, . the other two approximately 28 feet long. i Canyonlands National Park Superintendent, Bates Wilson is again accompanying Udail on his inspection tour of the proposed additions to tha park. Also with the Udall party is Utah Boating Supervisor, Sup-ervisor, Tedd Tuttle of the Division of Parks and Recreation. Rec-reation. Life Magazine's travel editor, Mary Leather-bee Leather-bee and photographer Fred Lyon are covering this leg of Udall's trip. Richard Schweitzer of the Institue of .American Arts at Santa Fe js also a member of this .week's trip as is Nelson day float trip through the park which includes negotiating the rapids of Cataract Canyon. Jack Currey of Western Rivers Ri-vers Expeditions, Salt Lake City, is hosting the Udalls with three large rubber pontoon rafts. I Jack Currey's Western LUver Expeditions is the host for Secretary Udall's float trip which is scheduled to go through Cataract Canyon Can-yon today (Thursday). Mem- bers of the inspection tour hiked Wednesday into' the region of the Doll House, to which point they jeeped last week. Udall plans to complete com-plete his trip Friday at noon wV.en they land at Hite in Lake Powell. I Udall commented on last week's four wheel drive trip into the Maze- area:' "The Maze," he said, "is a large section of unspoiled land and very beautiful. If included in Canyonlands National Park the Maze would probably prob-ably be retained as a wilderness wild-erness area with access limited lim-ited to hiking. It's almost impossible to build roads or trails there we had to use ropes to get into portions of me Maze." |
