Show Dear Sain: Several months ago, I invited the High and Junior Jun-ior High schools through their teachers, to enter seme of their work in the annual art exhibit. At the same time, I explained to them that they would be expected to display their own paintings, as our A-f A-f rames were unsuitable. We also sponsored a pos ter contest which they entered en-tered and produced soma very fine posters for our 'show. Their interest was high. But when the time came, they were unable to enter their work because of no facilities for displaying It. Mr. Ethelbau mentioned, when he came over, that they had enough to have a show of their own, if they had a way. The School system has not seen fit to provide so much as a sheet of celotex for them to use. This seems .very unfair to me to neglect a talent which Imijglht very well develop into a way of a livelihood for some of them. I do hope that our young people peo-ple will be provided with screns or stands for this purpose and they can have a show of their own if they desire, and will be able to enter our show each year. Respectfully, Ethel Ullarioh ,: ; Moab Art Guild Mr. Sam Taylor, Editor Times-Independent Moab, Utah Dear Editor: I can truthfully say that I have never written an editor or to a publication before but of course I have never been quite so jperturibed over a matter as a't present. , Do you know sir, a group is really serious ab-ut ab-ut painiting ' our City's trash cans? It is proposed to put a work of art on the cans and as I understand under-stand it, the only holdup ,is in finding a way to qualify the artists. I am sure that out of all the aspirants1 for the job there is not an experienced trash can painter in the lot. . The idea must have come from Taos, New Mexico, and if there is any place in the world where an artistically decorated trash-can trash-can is apropos, it is Taos, jvvhose life blood is art. Even the outdoor 'jons' there are deeorated with considerably more than the cut out half . moon. Ouray, Colorado has sineo stolen the idea from Taos, not content in letting the originator of the idea enjoy en-joy an exclusive. I find myself pointing a finger at Ournv- and saying, "copy cat." I hate to see Moab copy from any town because I know what it takes for some originality to make conversation pieces if that "bn the (puipose of this project. Should we find a good original idea, I won-fder won-fder what our feeling.-; would be in seeing other towns use it to where it would become commonplace common-place meriting no distinction distinc-tion at all. Who can fairly judge what an appropriate theme should be on our cans? Should we portray the cattle industry which pioneered pio-neered our economy? Should it be the uranium industry that brought us to and through a boom period and is making a jgreat comeback? Should it bo a potash miner that (is playing such a large part in our present economy econ-omy or would it be better fo leave the cans a pure ,sanitary looking white .with a simple plain sign saying, "Thanks for Your Help in Keeping Moab Beautiful." , It would sound ridiculous ridicu-lous to refer to one of our .local, artists as being the .winner of . several . ribbons (in our area shows; andj then adding, "Oh, yes, she alro did trash can number 13 in front of the post office." I Maybe deporafed cans (would be an incentive for ia prankster with a deft Istncke of the brush to imake an obscenity of an iant work. It might add to ithe already uncontrollable .spray can painting of obscene ob-scene words on our buildings build-ings and road signs, i The recent art exhibit .was taps, ft had dignity. It gained prestige for our local artists. Let's keep our art on a higher plane Ithan a trash can. i I may be too late in making this a controversial controver-sial point because I understand un-derstand the project has the blessing of the City Council. So, if the project goes through, I will ask Mr. Hatzewbuehler if I may do his Sanitation Department De-partment trucks with the Delicate Arch (Oh Brother!). Bro-ther!). Then, if we hold next year's art exhibit at ithe City Dump, we will have gone all the way. Sincerely, F. M. Pimpell Dear Editor: THE TRUE FACTS OF CTAP. HALL. Last night the School Beard voted 3 to 1 to accept ac-cept a Base Bid for the remodeling of Star Hall of $55,500. This does not include in-clude a new Roof, which could run $4,000 to $G.-000. $G.-000. It does not put a complete new Footing and Foundation under the old building which could run up to $20,000. This was ;ugge-,ted by Dr. Rarnctt as needed very badly. It does not include the cost of Seats at a estimated cot of $12,000. The present plans do not bring the building up to the State Fire Code and the Uniform Building Code f.cr reasons explained to Mr. Sundwall in his office in- Mr. Rohert Tanner, State Fire Marshall. - Some members of the Board do not care to heed 'the suggestions of Dr.'s iBarnett and Chiristensen that any time yoq spend 50"?- or even as low as 30 of the cost of a new building you should look to the new building, No true value money wise has been placed on Star Hall lit is doubted you could .get any one to take it down for what is in it, We are going way over 50 when completed and then what have we got. Estimated cost of a new building of this size . is $100,000. IJfe of the present pres-ent building when re-modeled not to exceed 25 years. A new building 50 years old. What will the present building seat? It has been stated that it will not seat any one school of our system. M?mfoers voting for the remodel of Star Hall were Irma Newell, J. G. Pink-erton Pink-erton and Chester Bros-troim. Bros-troim. Those voting against ag-ainst the issue were Marge Tomsic and Rlalph Griffin. Mr. Griffin voted just so the record would show he was against the issue. These are facts that the public should know as it is- Tax Money that pays for such a project. Are we getting Dollar value for Dollar spent? Manvin Clever Clever Construction Co. Dear Editor: In regards to the recent Canyonlands Art Exhibit, the school children and parents were quite disap-fpofinted disap-fpofinted that 'they didn't get to exhibit their pictures pic-tures because there wasn't was-n't anything to put the pictures on. The Art Guild has facilities only for framed work. Displays of unframed collections must be provided by exhibitors. I think that the sfchool board should make an effort ef-fort to get something for the children to use for this purpose, such as fib-erous fib-erous board or some kind so the pictures can be put up with thumb tacks. Being that the children are interested in painting, there should be some wav &r them to ishow their work. j Thank you, Jessie Anderson B |
