Show Green River c Sailor on Spacecraft Job (Q0036) JACKSONVILLE, JACKSON-VILLE, FLA. (FHTNC) Aviation Electrician's Mate Third Class Llcyd J. Me-cham, Me-cham, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd B. Me- cham of Green Riverv U-tah, U-tah, participated in the operation for the unman ned Apollo 4 spacecraft as a member of Heavy Photographic Photo-graphic Squadron 62. An RA3B "Skywarrior" twin-jet aircraft was on-station on-station west of Bermuda to photograph the entry of the first booster stage of the Saturn V, after separation from the second sec-ond stage. .Launched by the Saturn V booster rocket, the spacecraft circled the earth twice at an altitude of about 10 miles, as it plunged back to earth and . passed the 400,000 foot mark, the Apollo reached up to 24,000 miles an hour. The flight, designed to evaluate the Saturn V launch vehicle and test the Apollo's heat shield, subjected the shield to temperatures of 6,000 degrees de-grees as the craft re-entered the earth's atmosphere. |
