| Show REP MONO NONE TOO PLEASED m many phases of the tax legislation passed by the recent session of the legislature are commendable while in borne respects the program adapted Is objectionable and detrimental to the best interests of the state in the opinion of representative W D hammond of grand county who with mrs hammond returned the last of the week from salt lake city where he attended the cession mr hammond was disappointed in the action of the house on the resolution he introduced which proposed to reduce the per capita school distribution fund from 25 to 12 and using the entire 12 as an equalization fee such a program would reduce the state levy materially and at the same time would provide for educational equality all over the state the opposition of prominent state educational leaders who apparently felt that the measure would take away some of their power and split in halt the funds which they control was responsible for the defeat of the resolution mr hammond stated the resolutions providing for classification fi of property and an income tax mr hammond believes are very commendable in that they will enable taxing officials to levy against intangible property now escaping taxa i alon the grand county legislator was strongly opposed to the resolution which exempts mines from any tax change tor a period of four years in his opinion the mines as well as all other classes of property should be subject to impartial treatment during the period of readjustment when the new laws are being launched mr hammond fears that the tabea paid by the mines will be greatly reduced which would throw a greater burden on other classes of property the resolution that was finally passed he states singles the mines out as the object of special favor |
