| Show RANCHER MAKES PLEA AGAINST KILLING COYOTES that it costs more to support one government trapper than the total value of all the stock lost as a result of work of predatory animals Is the assertion of thomas J tynan rancher and stockman of colorado who has run large bands of sheep in the least populated sections of the state for many years and the expense of maintaining trappers is not the most important matter for consideration continued mr tynan the killing off of all coyotes for which the biological survey has a particular penchant and upon which the department makes its biggest talk is allowing the rabbits ground squirrels and other crop and pasture destroying animals to multiply to a point where they are destroying ying more in crop value than the stock losses ever amounted to supporting his claim that the killing of coyotes Is disastrous mr ty nan cited the case of the bacca land grant as an example here a few years ago the coyotes were practically eradicated by an extensive trapping and poisoning campaign put on by the biological survey the first year after the animals were killed off the ranch cut tons of alfalfa according to the manager harry tipton then the rabbits multiplied and ground squirrels increased to a point where the ranch was fairly overrun the cuttings the following year were reduced to tons and the year after that only 3 tons were put up here was a loss of tons of hay which figured at 10 a ton would amount to i 50 all through the plains country which has been settled up resulting in the killing off of the coyotes the loss of crops from rabbits and squirrels Is enormous the farmers have been forced to get out and maff drives in which tens of thousands 0 rabbits have been destroyed and ye the farms are overrun with them and the losses continue with coyote elds selling at 12 to 15 continued mr tynan it s easy to see that there will be plenty ot the animals taken by farmers ranchers and sportsmen without the stati going to the expense of appropriating large sums and assessing the live stock at the rate of so much per head to support trappers the loss of sheep by coyotes mr tynan contends Is next to nothing and few calves are dragged down bv them the animals will never approach a band of sheep in the care ot a herder and at night a lantern ftp keep them away he asserts that he has never lost a sheep by coyotes to his positive knowledge and he believes it a very serious mistake to pro further any state or federal against the animals denier post |
