Show WATER STATE SANITARY ENGINEER POINTS OUT WHERE MOAB SUPPLY COULD BE contaminated recently L II 11 hale state sanitary engineer on the staff of the state board of health visited moab and made an inspection of the moab pipe line system and water supply on his return to salt lake city he wrote a letter to the town board of moab suggesting a number of improvements in the system to safeguard the public health while here mr male took several samples of the moab water and he has since sent reports of the analyses which show that the water at the present time Is absolutes absolu tey pure and tree from bacteria in his letter to the town board however mr male points out that the water supply could easily be polluted and he urges that some improvements in the reservoir and spring tunnel be made to guard against possible contamination his letter follows after making a sanitary survey of the water system of moab the following suggestions and recommendations are made in order that the supply may be well protected against the possibility lity of chance pollution the water supply Is derived from a tunnel driven into the side of the embankment ban kment approximately twenty five feet to increase the flow of water from the spring the tunnel does not intercept the entire flow and a portion of it flows from the original out cropping of the spring in order that the entire flow may come from the tunnel I 1 suggest that a gallery be constructed ted from the end of the tunnel to intercept the how of water or that the original site of the spring be developed by excavating and a concrete box be constructed over the source to protect it against surface runoff run off and seepage at the present time the supply may be contaminated by material thrown into the reservoir or the water flowing in the open channel from the tunnel may be contaminated by tre passers and others loafing about the spring collection box the spring house wooden cover is in a poor condition allowing the entrance of insects toads etc to the water by collecting the entire supply of water from the tunnel nothing can get into the supply until it Is drawn from the taps in the city concrete covers with manholes over the collection boxes are most desirable since they prohibit anything from reaching the water analyses of the water in the city system in the past have shown more or less contamination while this contamination tami nation may not be dangerous at the present time it does indicate that harmful bacteria may gain admittance to the supply through the same avenues with disastrous results an adequate and safe culinary water supply is a cites greatest asset no other public utility does more to increase and maintain the public health than a continually sate and pure water supply if we can be of service kindly feel at liberty to call upon us |
