Show death claimed one of the most picturesque tur esque characters of southeastern utah tuesday evening when prank aged prospector of the la sal mountains died mr was 78 years of age and tor the past year had been suffering from infirri ties resulting from his advanced years last fall he came down from his cabin home south of la sal and during the last few months of his life he was cared for at the home of R L win boum at moab A week ago he contracted a severe cold which added to to his other disabilities brought on bis deah funeral services will be held today and interment will be at the moab cemetery mr cc spent forty years prospecting in the la sal mountains he first came to this district in 1884 when he worked on some claims on pack creek he left the section and several years later returned and had remained here ever since he had some mining claims on the south end of the la and near big indian and until the last year or two remained at his mines the year round doing development work he had implicit faith in the mining possibilities of the district and lived on year af er year in the confident hope that he would open up a bonanza producer it Is said that mr had struck it rich several times during his lifetime at one time he sold out a mining property tor in cash but as Is often the way with prospectors who acquire sudden riches he soon parted with his fortune unlike many old prospectors mr was not inclined to be a hermit he liked to associate with people and until a few years ago he came to town at regular intervals to renew friendships he was respected by all who knew him he was a striking figure always standing very erect with piercing black eves and a flowing white beard he commanded attention wherever he went mr was born in illinois oct 7 1850 his mother 97 years of age Is still living at mackinaw Mackl naw III and a sister mrs emma trimble also lives there four daughters survive him they are mrs frankle trainer of ouray colo mrs jess bell of dove creek colo and carrie and sylvia of denver colo whose last names are not known A grandson john resides at sego and came to moab tc attend the funeral |
