Show I 1 ICE JAM HINDERS navigation OF COLORADO RIVER an ice jam in the colorado river about four miles above the frank shafer no 1 well on cane creek which held up navigation of the stream for eight days was partial ly conquered yesterday when a channel was broken round the gorge wide enough to permit the passage of the moab garage companas comp anys big freight barge which had been marooned bs low the jam the ice gorge formed sunday night january 2 while the barge was at the shafer well the garage immediately put a crew of men at work in en attempt to break it up and all of the dynamite avail able at moab was used without success on sunday district superintendent john II 11 moyer of the midwest exploration company realizing the necessity of keeping the river open so that operations could proceed uninterrupted on the river wells purchased two tons of dynamite at grand junction and a truck returned with the powder tuesday night yesterday the fight to reopen the river was resumed umed partly by the aid of the powder and partly by the action of the river a new channel was cut around the gorge and the boat was able to make the return trio ast night this morning it left or te wells with a full josd of fuel and supplies for the oil camps down the nver there is danger that the narrow channel around the jam may be closed by bloating loa ting ice at any time but the taken to the camps today will leep them operating for another weeks IT the fight to brek up the big gorge s being continued the weather has moderated materially the past week and it Is believed that troubles from ice will soon e over |
