| Show OIL AT CRESCENT AND GIBSON GOOD SHOWINGS AT SHALLOW DEPTHS REPORTED J H SHAFER WELL HAS BEEN CASED AND CLEANED OUT AND TEST OF GAS SAND TO BE MADE GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADE AT OTHER WELLS throughout DISTRICT there have been several interesting developments i the southeastern utah oil situation the past week on gibson dome the utah petroleum corporations well encountered a showing of oil and gas in sandy shale at 1070 feel the showing is a very encouraging one and gives credence to the belief of the companas comp anys geologists that a sand should be ered within the next hundred feet or so casing is being run to shut off water before drilling will be resulted an oil sand over seven feet in thickness was cut by the armstrong companas comp anys diamond drill on crescent dome monday at a depth of around 1350 feet according to reliable report the sand is highly saturated and it is believed will make considerable pro diamond drilling is conducted with the hole full of hnud and for this reason it is said no great amount of oil was in evidence but the sand core showed oil content the driller in charge went to salt lake city to meet W M armstrong ast los angeles owner of the well who will personally inspect the showing at the big six well on moab anticline drilling of new hole has been resumed and there is a considerable increase in the gas flow the depth is feet and a hard shale is being drilled the prospects of encountering an oil within the next few hundred feet are believed to be very favorable the J H shafer no 1 well on shafer dome has been running 8 1 4 inch casing the past week and a test of the gas encountered at feet will be made within the next few days jhb casing was set to a depth of feet when the bridge sixty feet off bottom ws drilled out the hole gassed considerably in spite of the fact that it was filled with mud some wire cable the result of the fishing job of several weeks ago is now being drilled up and this has earned the hole to a depth of feet the gas is apparently coming from a black formation although ait oit account of the wire in the bottom it has been impossible to run a core barrel to get an accurate sample of the within the next few days it is probable that the mud will be baided bailed from the hole to test out the gas stratum the strang of 4 3 casing for the frank shafer no 1 discovery well on cane creek dome should arrive at moab in about ten days it is expected it was shipped from the factory at pittsburgh yesterday the casing will be run to near bottom at feet to test out the high pressure oil and gas stratum encountered there which spouted a column of oil over the derrick several times the well continues ta flow a small stream of oil through the mud with which it had been filled to hold back the pressure with the softening of the weather operations can now be speeded up throughout the entire district river transportation has been practically at a standstill since the first of the year due to ice jamp but yesterday navigation was resumed and with warmer weather no great amount of grief from this cause is expected evidences from every hand indicate that the coming year will witness an immense increase in oil drilling throughout the district with several of the wells approaching objective territory it is likely that more structures will be proved to be oil beaning before spring the next commercial flow of oil encountered will without a doubt result in a great increase of drilling |
