A Associated Press Pre SPOKANE Wash Vash Oct 10 Senator 10 Senator Johnson speaking last night at the I armory here said in part nation Today my friends this stands at the crossroads of its destiny On one hand Is the tortuous the sinuous sinuous ous the cynical path of ot European and Asiatic diplomacy and on the other hand is 11 the straight and narrow path of per cent Americanism and it Is this latter path that some men in Washington have chosen and we are going along that path of oC Americanism until our country our republic shall be safeguarded and we are going to the goal of safeguarding this country in the league of nations no matter what the obstacles and no matter what the cost may be You I take It Just like raj myself self would have been en glad to advocate any measure which would have hate brought peace unto the world good will unto men and would have prevented for all time lime in the future any other wars But nut when the reality came to us when we first learned to analyze and to understand understand under under- stand we began to realize faintly Under Under-j at first but finally with Increasing plainness plainness plainness plain plain- ness and with Increasing sorrow too that what was presented to us In the form of ot a league ague of nations was wa not a design to prevent war at all but was wasa a purpose upon the part of ot European and Asiatic nations to make the United States Slates of America bear the burden of or every future war that should be brought in tn all this world OPPOSITION ARISES And when this became apparent to tous tous us then It was that the opposition arose But alread already a sentiment had been created by men throughout this land created for a document which they had never seen which we had never seen and which indeed our people people people peo peo- little understood and this sentiment sentiment sentiment senti senti- ment thus created we have hate been en endeavoring endeavoring endeavoring en- en to combat in the last couple of oC months combat with such success that today I feel te-el I am able to predict to this great audience that the league of or nations if It It passes the United States senate will have annexed to it such protecting reservations as all will wUl enable us In the future to govern ourselves ourselves our our- selves Just as we hav hays governed ourselves ourselves our our- selves seh-es in the p past st There are many reasons which have b been en advanced why this document should hould be adopted In our country All AU of ot them I cannot touch upon In my address within the limits of any anyone one evening e But these which YOu vou have I heard he-ard most frequently 1 l refer to in or order order or- or der that you tou may understand that the advocates 1 of the Ipa league ue of nations I II really fall I present nothing tangible uP pl which wh h that document should become ax j I part of ot the law Jaw of ot this land You Tou have hate heard Just as I have heard that we I have entered te u upon our r world ce career I that we have e become o a part t of the worlds world politics and that the splendid isolation which has been ours in the I I past put can no lon longer er obtain In this I country Aga Again and again our opponents opponents opponents I ring the changes upon the tho fact tact that this country cannot be Isolated In Inthe Inthe inthe the future longer and say flay to us that it Is necessary in order that we play our part In world politics and stabilize the tho WO And nd that hat we go forward upon our our o casting our ur fortunes with 1 tie st re-st or tho the earth NEVER ISOLATED D We have never been Isolated my friends friend Ve We have never been isolated in any fashion from the rest of ot the world neither r commercially nor financially financially financially finan finan- nor socially We Ve have never been Isolated except In one aspect alone and alone and that is geographically geo geo- graphically The Lord gave us the two great oceans one upon the eastern a tern coast the other upon the western coast and the only Isolation which has been ours in the past Is the Isolation I that the Lord Yord gave to us of the two great oceans and even en the league of nations and Woodrow Wilson cannot dry up the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans They tell us that we must make this thin supreme sacrifice and throw our fortunes fortune with the rest st of ot the world What they mean Is that we throw our fortunes to the rest of the world |
