Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Well, I am glad to report we are in. The basketball team I mean has won the Jordan division divis-ion title. They did by winning over Judge 53-27 as Murray was taking Grantsville on the Cowboys' Cow-boys' own floor. The game against Judge was a thriller for the entire first half. The locals started like a fire engine en-gine and ran up a nine point lead, but at this point a boy by the name of Bob Hill lor Judge went into action and be fore you knew what happened the Judge team had collared the Miners, and what looked like a rout had turned into a battle. The score was tied up three times, 11-11, 13-13 and 19-19, but just before the half ended the locals took a five point lead. In the first half "Moose" Sanchez San-chez carried the scoring load, helped by Don Gust, who had been sent into the game to stop this fellow Bob Hill. But in the second half the other Bingham seige gun Eddie Gaythwaite took charge and besides sweeping the back boards he hit the ring plenty. plen-ty. Again Don Gust was a big help, but in this half the local team really caught fire, and everybody ev-erybody got into the act. Coach Allsop swept the bench clean, giving every man a chance and they came through like champions. champ-ions. This wel. the first game that we have lost a man by the foul route. Sanchez went out in the third quarter, although every one of the local boys looked good and Gaythwaite had 12 points, Sanchez 15, and Gust 13. It was Bob Hill of Judge high for the night with 18 and some of these boarded on the sensational side. What a player this boy is. The name Hill has long been associated associ-ated with Judge athletics but none has ever been greater than Bob Hill was last Friday night. Some other highlights, was the playing of Don Gust. Don is a senior and this isn't the first time he has furnished the spark Sunny was looking for. Another was the fact that this game showed the fans Bingham has a pretty good bench, a thing they will need in the tournament. As always, the Pep club put on a grand drill between nalves. I sure hope these girls can show their stuff in the big state meet. A bunch as good as they are, should be seen by more people. One more game to go and that with Murray. A game that is very important to the Murray boys, as they are in a three way tie with Tooele, and Grantsville for second place, and second place goes to the tournament in the Jordan division. So the fans can expect a ball game. They tell me its a sell out. j I see where Rex Layne has been offered a title shot with Ezzra Charles in San Francisco next fall. Kayne, the promotor has offered Layne $10,000 and Charles $35,000. Of course it is stipulated that Rex win his next three fights. I for one hope that Marv Jensen, his manager, won't be foolish enough to be led into this one, because Layne is still a couple of years away from his top form and he can make three times $10,000 in the next two years and get the experience that he needs in the bargain. If he fights Charles now and he is beaten, as I think he would be, ha i-nn1H ho ripht back at the mood he can be awful rough, and they tell me he has made up his mind to go from here in. Had a visit from a former Bingham man that used to play quite a bit of baseball and was as tough as a boot in a bowling match, Cliff Butterfield. Cliff now makes his home in Long Beach, Calif., and is still bowling. bowl-ing. He has a son that is going to be quite a ball player they tell me. Nice to see some of the former Bingham boys. See you next week. AL bottom, and having been beaten could not demand half the money mon-ey he can get by climbing slowly and winning as he goes. No, I say Rex isn't ready for the top boys yet and my bet is Marv Jensen Jen-sen will say the same. Next Tuesday Utah's other young light heavy, Jay Lambert, will go against a coast heavyweight. heavy-weight. He was to fight Henry, Jack Dempsey's protege, but j Henry hurt a hand in his last fight, so Promoter Jim Downing had to get a sub. If Jay is in the |
