f Changes the a Pioneers See w When the handful of pioneers who participate in today's activities activities activities ac- ac look about th them m they must be surprised at the changes which have taken place within a handful of years The miracle of industry has wrought wonders in this valley vaHey 1 since I first their slow moving ox OK teams came slowly into the deI desired desired de- de sired haven of refuge This is the place said Brigham Young And This is the place is is the declaration of every boosting e energetic n real patriotic son of Utah Utah native native or a adopted adopted opted today And what a kaleidoscope this brief period of years from 1847 to 1914 has been in this state 1 The crude beginnings at farming are arc now replaced by vast areas of cultivated soil son The great stretches of fields rich with coming harvest the orchards with a record crop the other natural resources resources such as the huge mining industries of the state all state all tell tellof of great advancement ad made in a brief stretch of time And upon what a firm foundation this was built The hardy pioneers men and women aye women aye and children too too too- who came across the plains amid savage hordes and crossed the 1 mountains by bv the white faced death of the blizzard blizzard- that was the type of people who settled Utah Times there were vere indeed when the str struggle seemed all but butin in vain when the odds appeared to be too heavy against the heroic b band nd But always a leader sprang to the fore and saved the company of devoted followers in the hour of peril 1 And now the victory The day which Utah celebrates with state pride is a day of rejoicing Her memorial is harvest field after harvest field city after city farm after farm one educational i i institution after another And particularly this year of 1914 d do the record breaking crops assure the West of prosperity All honor to the few remaining g veterans who lived through the early earh r days of hardship and privation and are gathered in our t city today to recall the victories of peace more glorious than thant war k All AU hail the pioneers r. r 1
