F PHILLIPS SPRINGVILLE 30 30 May 1 When Whon When persons during four weeks will wll drive from five to seventy five miles to visit an art exposition which is exhibited In a high school building in one of the tho smaller cities of the tho state it speaks remarkably well for the aesthetic tastes of the people of Utah The mecca for the art lovers o othe ot of the state for the past month has been Springville where artists from twenty five states had on exhibition paintings This number Included ed portraits as aswell well as views o ot of scenery and all were pronounced to tobe tobe tobe be beautiful works of ot the artist In addition to the paintings there were also exhibited two pi pieces es o ot of sculpture the work of the famous sculptor of Utah Cyrus E. E whoso whose work in Lincoln park in Chicago Chicago Chi Chi- cago cage and at Plymouth Rock Mass and other points In the East has provoked the admiration of millions YOUNG REPRESENTED Then too were exhibited some sketches of another Utahn who has become famous In the world Mahenri Mahonri Ma- Ma honri henri Young whose work has passed the critics in the East as also in the theold theold theold old world Mr Young was the artist artist artist ar ar- ar- ar of a local newspaper many years ago From the exhibit of paintings that tha are exhibited at the high school annually there are two or three paintings from the number exhibited which are either purchased purchased purchased pur pur- chased or donated to the school ex exhibIt exhibit ex- ex hibit so that the school collection is unusually large This collection Isnow is isnow isnow now In charge of ot the Springville High h School Art association Thursday was the day for the presentation of the pictures that had been awarded first honors an anthey and they were unveiled the prize picture picture pic plc- ture the work of John F. F Carlson of at New York The unveiling was by I Miss Odessa Mendenhall and It took place in the main room of the high I school building In the presence o or of more than 1000 persons Another i painting was unveiled by Miss Lafel Lafe i Wheeler the work of or C. C CN N N. DuPage entitled Summertime Still another another another an an- other picture was unveiled lIed a present present present pres pres- ent from Allen Rosenthal of ot Philadelphia Philadelphia Phila Phila- delphia a well known portrait painter of or the east entitled The I Lady In White PICTURES PRESENTED Then Bishop Hilton Robinson o of Springville presented the association association tion with a beautiful picture of a Japanese temple on behalf of himself himself him him- self and wife Another painting was also presented by Dr Samuel H H. Dern was the principal speaker and he paid 1 high tribute to the artists whose work was exhibited and also to o the High School Art association for the interest which It has shown In art Other speakers were Walter alter Adams of Provo and Dr George L L. Smart who was the originator of ot the ne plan for a collection of ot paintIngs paintIngs paintings paint- paint Ings for the school The exhibition will close Sunday night at 9 o'clock and It is expected that hat thata a great many lovers of art from the state will visit the collection on that day and anti evening |
