Show v Sports Here and There by AI Ablett The score board now reads five won and two lost. I don't hardly know how to put into words just how bad the local team looked in that game Friday night. Their passing was off so bad that half the time they were hitting one another in the face and the other half they were chasing the ball along the floor. Grantsville stole the hall away at least twenty times. The Cowboys Cow-boys d;dn't get too many set up shots but hey were accurate from outside the keyhole. Grantsville made the first basket and from then on Bingham was trying to , catch them. The score by quart-1 ers read 8-5 Cowboys 17-10 at half with the Grantsville boys on top. They increased their lead by one point at the third quarter mark 23-16 and the final score lead 34-26. Coach Allsop tried a number of combinations but they were all about the same. There just wasn't one of the boys that could provide the sprk they needed to get into high gear. Strombr-rg and Lawrence were potting them outside and Worth-ington Worth-ington the big center was dominating dom-inating both back boards. Elsh-ola Elsh-ola and Hammond, the Cowboy guards, also did a fine job in stopping the Bingham attack. This made the Cowboys fourth straight win and if Coach Lindsay Lind-say can keep his starting five in j the lineup they will be tough from here in. The one redeeming teature of the game was the Girls Pep club drill put on between halves. It was a Valentine theme, called "Sweethearts on Parade''. The grand march was led by Dennie Carrigan and Margie Susaeta, both five year olds. Margie played play-ed the part of the blushing bride while Dennis was as cool as Tom-Mansville Tom-Mansville at his sixth wedding. After the march, the girls went into a drill that for precision and timing was something to behold. Virginia Harris, their joaeh, can always be depended on to have something original for the Pep J club. The locals play Tooele tonight (Friday) on the Tooele floor and this one is almost a must. But if the boys haven't shaped out of their slump it will be rough row to hoe. I think they have learned their lesson. BYU fell apart on their eastern east-ern jaunt losing one to Denver and two to Colorado Aggies. Utah lost to the USAC at Logan but turned the tables at he U field-house. field-house. Wyoming is seting in a good spot with a two game lead, with Denver in the two hole. The Pioneers have three games left , with the cowpokes and if they can win two of these they will be the team that Wyoming will have to watch. The baseball clinic held in the Gemmell gym Saturday night was attended by about 300 and the youngsters learned a great deal about how that game of baseball is played. Everyone in attendance got a great kick out of the world series pictures. They were as clear as a bell and the sound was such that it was almost al-most like being there. Bert Dunn, co-owner of the Salt Lake Bees showed one of his training pictures showing the fundamentals of fielding, throw ing ani hitting that is sure a dandy. One of the best and easiest eas-iest ways of teaching I have ever seen. Fred Sanford of the Yankees Yan-kees was in attendance and gave the aspiring pitchers some valuable valu-able tips, as Occie Evans went into all phases of the game. Surely Sure-ly a profitable evening for the youngsters and an enjoyable one for the adults. Herb Babcock and myself take this means of thanking thank-ing these fine gentlemen for their efforts, and to wish them a very successful year. A meeting has been called for the Utah Industrial league for Friday the 24th at the Magna clubhouse. The information I have is that Bingham will again have a team in the race, and as last year they will follow the youth movement. As every one knows this a system of trial and error. Some boys are cut out to be ball players and some are not, to weed these boys out will at least take three or four years, but in the end we will have a team that is our own and one that we can well be proud of. But the system requires the backing back-ing of every fan in the community. commu-nity. So here's hoping that the Bingham fans will do just that. See you next week. AL |
