Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Last Sunday the Gun club held another shoot and the largest turnout of the season was on hand to take part. The weather was fine and some great scores turned in. I understand they are picking a team to represent the club in team matches. This coming com-ing Sunday they are holding an- otner prize shoot of some kind so be on hand. Utah U and the Aggies played a ball game but it looked like a j Bingham inter-squad game with I four players from Bingham on each team and two Bingham men umpiring. Dean Stringham pitched pitch-ed a good game for the Aggies but lost 4 to 2 as another Bingham Bing-ham boy played a big part in the Utah victory. Clyde Nichols had two for three and stole two bases. bas-es. Jimmie Brown of Copperton is playing a whale of a game in right field for the U and Sergio Alvarez looked like the best in-fielder in-fielder out there. These are all former Bingham high school stars and Coach Santistevan must have been proud of them as he was the base umpire with Charlie Bates behind the plate. BYU's leading the league with one win and no losses. But my guess is the winner will be between be-tween the Aggies and Utah. College Col-lege baseball is making a great comeback in Utah as it is all over the country. The big leagues got off to a flying start, breaking the opening open-ing day attendance mark. 73,000 saw the opener in Cleveland as the one and only Bob Feller pitched a two hitter to beat St. Louis. Boston Red Sox dropped a double header to Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's. Lou Brissie the big boy that had his leg shattered shatter-ed in the war jerked off a four hitter against the millionaires but in doing it was almost lost for the season when Ted Williams hit him on his bad leg with a screaming line drive. He is one of the young stars you will have to watch this season. sea-son. Connie says he will be as great as Groves. Another young fellow that will bear watching is Curt Simmons of the Philadelphia Phila-delphia Blue Jays. He is the lad they gave something like $60,000 to sign. Another coming star is Bill Ashburn of the same team. Fast as a deer and he can hit. Sauer of Cincinnati is hitting the ball hard, another star in the making. The Cubs have come up with a shortstop in this boy Smalley that might be the fellow they have been looking for ever since Jurges. McCall a young pitcher for the Boston Red Sox has McCarthy's Mc-Carthy's OK and so it goes as another great baseball season gets underway. Bingham high school dropped their opening game to Cyprus but have taken Murray and Morgan Mor-gan in their last two starts and from all indications they are still the team to beat in the B division. divis-ion. Sandy has three different pitchers go the route and this is where he was supposed to be weak. Pino, Montoya and Ball have all pitched good ball. Pino lost but he only gave six hits and struck out 12 men. They play Judge today at Copperton and my guess is they will win going away. I understand we are going to have an amateur team sponsored by the BDAA. Great thing for the young ball players of Bingham, Bing-ham, and a great thing for Bingham. Bing-ham. Jimmie will tell you about it in his column. See you next week. AL |
