Show Salt Lake Cold T award w a r d de the T raining e Camp of the thee ther at Fort Douglas for citizens r The e military training ining camp West Nest comes to a close today It has proved even a bigger success than of the enthusiasts could from a preparedness standpoint any have estimated considering the numerous difficulties that developed Six Sit hundred good Americans have with heartbreaking inn b regularity that some day be very useful to many valuable lessons may them in their defense of their country's rights of the learned sometHing some- some Those who came from other sections country lessons during the encampment They learned tHing g besides military o have known all along that along that that of the what the Salt Lake members camp I this is the least enthusiastic city of its size in in America Only a few citizens citizens' military training camps have been held in ilie United States EVERYWHERE EVERY ELSE THEY IIA HAVE VE STIRRED THE IMAGINATION AND THE P PATRIOTISM r OF THE RESI- RESI DENTS The he camp at Fort Douglas was scarcely noticed by the people of this community at all ail n The band concerts which invariably attract attention at other army posts drew comparatively few persons here And the Salt Lake members of the camp have been trying ever since the parade downtown to explain to the out of town citizen soldiers the psychology of Salt Lake crowds Did we make such a sorry showing they asked in in surprise as they they marched block after block with hardly a hand clap or a cheer to reward leward them for tramping g the hard pavement after a ten-hour ten day of work at the fortIn fortIn fortIn fort In our town such a demonstration would have aroused the citizens to a high pitch of enthusiasm was a common remark made I by men who had traveled a long distance to give this service service to their country and who could not understand such apathy as was ivas was shown by I local people during the entire encampment THAT CARNIVAL CROWD CRO G GAVE VE SALT LAKE A BLACKEYE BLACK BLACKEYE EYE IN THE SIGHT OF THE VISITING ROOKIES When the boys made the hard march to Big Cottonwood canyon and put up a regular army camp in in the thc frost irot ost picturesque spot that has seen any such camp the Salt Lakers naturally hoped that the 4 people of Salt Lake Lake especially especially those with machines would machines would drive out and show some interest in a movement ment with such patriotic motives back of it a f f V i Not more than six persons motored out from the city That also made the he visiting citizen soldiers wonder what kind of ofa n a a town this is that knows nothing of enthusiasm and apparently has NO INTEREST WHATEVER IN A MOVEMENT THAT HAS STIRRED THE HE REST OF THE NATION At Plattsburg at Monterey and at oth other r places where the training camps have been held the local people took a keen interest in the work of the men who were voluntarily giving their time and their labor in a great patriotic preparedness plan Blase old Salt Lake however remained just as cold toward this big camp as it has been bce toward every other enterprise T The e same sam apathy thai t has won for Salt Lake the reputation among t theatrical folks of being the least responsive town in in America was manifested from the beginning until the close of the training camp Outside of a visit to the trenches made by members of the Rotary club lu and th the Commercial club one day this city remained totally indifferent n to the the splendid spirit of patriotic service offered so willingly will will- by the s six sib hundred men who joined the camp IT WAS A SORRY SHOWING SHOVING FOR A CITY THAT HAS SO MANY NATURAL ADVANTAGES It amazed not only the out of town town rookies but the officers who trained them as well This indifference is Salt Lakes Lake's worst fault at present It will have to be overcome and replaced with civic civic pride and proper spirit before this city can reach its proper goal |
