Show PIONEER BASEBALL Many baseball fans wonder why the Pioneer league is perhaps per-haps the best Class C league in America. President J. P. (Jack) Halliwell feels he has an answer to that question. In the first place, says Halliwell, Halli-well, league teams must carry but three rookies. Seven players can be veterans and the rest are limited service players. A rookie is one who has less than 45 days service; a limited service man hasn't played three years with at least 45 days for each season. Veterans are those who play three years or more. The salary limit in the Pioneer league is $3,400. A player-manager's salary does not count in tlr; player salary limit but he does count in the player limit. League clubs are allowed to have 24 men on their squads until 30 days after the season starts. Then the limit is cut to 17 active players." play-ers." The Pocatello Cardinals have their own band. It will play at the opening of each new series. The band is called the Red bird Hotshots. The band is made up of eight piece's and is directed by a Pocatello man. Pioneer league umpire, Walt Welaj, went three years without "thumbing" a player. He broke that record June 13 when Bob Stuhpf, Great Falls catcher, was ousted in a game at Ogden. The Billings baseball club has donated a new 50 foot steel flag pole and a flag to the city of Billings. President Halliwell has fined four Pioneer league players a total of $22.50. Pioneer league baseball fans are eagerly awaiting this year's All-Star game. This season it will be July 20 at Derks field in Salt Lake City. Fans will select the teams by voting in newspaper and radio station ballots in league cities, said President Halliwell. However, How-ever, the teams will be subject to the approval of managers of both the North and South teams. The managers will be the ones whose teams are highest after midnight July 15. The third base coaches will be managers of the next highest teams and the first base coaches, the managers of the third highest teams.
