PIONEER DAY T Tomorrow will be Pioneer day in Utah It is right ight to celebrate it The la laying ing of the foundation on of a State is is isa a a serious matter when it is done b by those who are in poverty and in a land hind as yet tinh un tin untried t h tried it is a still more serious matter I It is well to 7 re remember ber that ds day in itah well vell to call over over the old names and to give t to each his or her meed of praise w It It was wa's was sixty years ago that the first band came sixty years ago tomorrow Nearly all of those have passed on They gave their youth and their strength to to the desert what was then the desert is reproducing reproducing ing their smiles and their strength A beautiful and prosperous city has sprung up from the dust in which their weary feet on that day c c w walked walked ked to a resting place where they wa walked k d i all ll th the flow flowers dowers s i-s of summer are blooming blooming all all is changed save the solemn mountains the lake and the sunbeams What mat was then a chill frontier separated from all the he wo world ld by hundreds of weary leagues is now connected north south east and west with ith all the theland theland Jand- Jand landby land land- by rail with all the world by wire and fair stately temples and business structures make beautiful this spot v vIt It is well to honor this day well veIl to t tell H of the Strong trong men and brave women who first dedicated the spot to civilization and well to strew with flowers flow- flow ers their graves And it is well to keep in ili remembrance that the State they laid the first rude fOUl foundation dation o of is nowa now va a sovereign State a star in the constellation of the Union and linked w with h all the grandeur of the great greatS S Republic and that in all the world s since nce the beginning beginning begin begin- ning ling of time no State has been in comp company ny with anything anything anything any any- thing so majestic and so hi high h as our our Republic that as it is well to honor those who made the b beginning in Utah at the same time we should cherish the memory memry mem- mem jory ory ry of those who in the face of a mighty war founded th the Republic itself consecrated to it their fortunes their sacred honor and the their r lives and on n new w lines dedicated it to freedom and to equal rights and the same opportunities for all meri men THE TELEGRAM I wishes TELEGRAM wishes for lor all who take part i in iii celebrating the day the utmost pleasure and extends the h hope pe that no accident may mar the festivities and that as the day closes all engaged in it will feel that they are better and better Americans m
