GHOST EATS AND MAKES MAliES CHI CHINESE lESE WILD WITH FEAR PEKING July uly 23 A A ghost that eats has thrown the towns tows in Siang-fu Siang district of China into a commotion The facts as related in the North China Herald are aro remarkable The thirty thirty- year old son of lung Tzi-lung a schoolteacher school schoolteacher l teacher was thought to have died of typhus fever His family being very poor the body was placed in a frail frai verr l wooden c t and buried only a few inches in the soil soi outside the western wester gate of the town towi of Ten days later a man man put puE his horse out to graze near the spot The beast found good od grass gass near the grave and ana brou brought ht its Is foot down on the gave soil soi above the coffin the lid of which was broken In Ina a little while th the owner of the horse saw a gaunt white arm thrust through the hole made by the hoof of the horse 1 Thinking the dead mans man's ghost host was wa s about to rise to avenge the insult o in the breaking of the coffin the watcher hurried up and began beg shoveling earth into the hole to keep the ghost down A muffled voice expostulated and be begged ed to be freed frEed claiming to be he bethe bethe hethe the living son of Tzi The watcher fled fed in terror to the town where he told everyone everone that he met of what happened The ghosts father urged that the ghost should be belet let alone and not further disturbed aone A large crowd however went o out t of the city to view in wonder The ghost 1 kept beg begging ng most piteously to be let out One man had co courage rage enough to unearth the cover of the cof coffin fin fn completely thus allowing the resurrected man to sit up Rice soup and wine were brou brought ht and ravenously devoured by the the ghost ghost 1 still sti sitting upright in his coffin imbedded in the earth Finally Finaly the unhappy ghost host wa was released re re reo leased and confined in a temple until he is able to prove that he is a living man and has las a right to be regarded as alive alve
