Show ALFALFA WEEVIL DISCOTEREP IN HEW DISTRICT TO NORTH The destturtive alfalfa weevil haa been found in Brigbam City and Wil-lard Wil-lard fields, according to information received by A. U. Kirkland, in charge of the government's investigations in this section, from A. N. Ainslie, field agent, now working in the northern part of the state. i Mr. Ainslie discoveries show the: presence of the weevil thirty miles further fur-ther north than any point heretofore infested, so far as tha records show. Farmers in the northern part of the state have reported from time to time that the weevil had been found in their fields, but it usually turned out that the ' weevil " was merely some com mo a old bug, that looked like the alfalfa pert to the farmer. Now, however, the weevil has been identified by an expert and the government gov-ernment employee working to exterminate exter-minate the pest realise that their field of work is larger than was thought for. . I Mr. Kirkland said this morning that in a short, time he will have a eorps of four field men working to determine if possible just how far the pest ex tends at present. Cache valley and Malad valley, both alfalfa growing sections, and natural highways for-the weevil to get into southern Idaho, will be thoroughly inspected. As yet the weevil has not been reported from Idaho, but inasmuch as its depredations depreda-tions eitend far north in this state, it would aot be surprising to the officials if they found the pest over the line. Mr. Kirkland says that his men will make inspections ia western Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Nevada t during the summer. |
