Show The Woman Win, W'OMEN who have been complaining that 'the lav discriminates against them should study the recent decision of the Utah supreme court, wherein the court holds that a woman once granted alimony may continue tocoTIect, eveiPafter she has remarried. The court points out that the relief of the husband hus-band required to pay alimony lies In petitioning petition-ing the court for a reopening of the case and a modification of the divorce decree. Whfle this is the law, it certainly has little- In ommon with what is just and right under common sense reasoning, unless the payments are specifically for the support of children. In marrying a man naturally assumes an obligation to support his wife. He does not lose this obligation when ihe marriage fails and can reasonably be expected to protect pro-tect her against want when the union is broken. But when, the woman marries again it would seem that the man should be spared further responsibility in the matter. Another man has assumed the obligations he formerly held, unless the rights of children are at issue. Just reasoning and just laws v.culd prompt the Conclusion that the woman starts all over again when she remarries. Otherwise there tls little to prevent the designing woman from making a profession of marriage. She might have four or five former husbands contributing to the support of herself and her husband as one. And yet some' women sigh for complete equality In the law. |
