Show M00T BERT THE EHRTH ON HIS SYES AND NAYS; HIS RECORD IN SENATE (BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT.) ' WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. It is now four years, lacking a month, since Reed Smoot was sent to the United States Senate to represent the people of Utah. That he haa not rearesented them is hardly his fault. The Congressional Record from 1GC3 to 1907 may be searched in vain to find the strong personality per-sonality of the young man impressed upon it to any marked degree. Of cour"? it i r-.istoinnry f.-r a nw . member of tl.e :i-jj;:st lio.ly of the uje .or branch of Congress t maintain a tirorvcr reti-nee for tho first two years, but to f:iv something worth li.-tecin t during tli M-rnd two. A nSici:ovs si!r.ce is the rocrd of tho senior Senator from T'tah. This co'irse has been altogether wise. It has a'.vnys been the course of a member, whithir in House or Senate, whos State has not popularly approved of Ills electi'n. Reed Smoot 's case is without precedent prece-dent in that at the end of four years of attendance and faithful answer to rollcall his right to be present is still sub judice. In tiie vast maj"rity of rase? of con-te;r. con-te;r. the (uestuins involved are disposed dis-posed of within three or four months at farthest. The perpetual procrastination procrastina-tion in the case of the apostle Senator la been premeditated, deliberate, and determined. That these tactics have been ;t complete success is now onlv too openly and boastingly proclaimed. Here is the apostle Senator's lecord of work d.iring the las; session: He ii ade no set speeches, to be found in the Record. He is credited with scanty remarks n ''The Five ( ivilized Tribes.'' ''Forest ''For-est Reservations. " "(irand Canyon Forest Reserve. " 'Immigration," '"Pensions for Indian Wars." " Provo ; Publie Rmlding," "Statehood Bill." "F'ti'.'i Indian Res. r e. ' ' and the i Reserve Timber." Some J'""' reports from his committees commit-tees are to his credit, the most of them : private pensions, and about forty bills ' and resolutions. 9 But there is probably not another Senator who can beat his record on his ayes and nays. He has been incessantly at work saying either of these two ; words, and these only, now for four long, strenuous years. |
