Show WHOLESALE ROBBERY Of PEOPLE, PETERSON SRYS; PURE POOD BILL READY "Utah's citizens are expending each year close to ha If . a million dollars in foodstuffs that they do nor crt. .Adulterated .Adul-terated foods are being dumped in Utnh. and at least half j a million dollars of the people's money is being taken out and away from Utah. There is absolutely nothing given in .return for this amount of money. It is a wholesale rr b-bery b-bery of the common people, who are compelled to expend from 30 to 60 per cent of their earnings for food er.ch year." In these terms State Dairy and Food Commissioner John Peterson gave his reasons to TIIF TELKQRAM for preparing a pure food bill for the present session f the Legislature. The bill is a voluminous affair, and is the most comprehensive one on the subject that has ever been i iresented. I The bill extends the power of the Commissioner "s r15ce. repeals the old ; I laws and allows him greater powers and ' asajs-anre. It makes provisions for I TjY foods by setting the standard of ifObth and purity of all food and , drink and constituents of foM and ; drink as the standard authorised by the assoeiation of official agricultural chemists chem-ists of the Bureau of Chemistry at Washington. D. C The bill makes it unlawful to sell un- derrade "booze," or adulterated liquors liq-uors of any kind. It forbids the imita tions of fruits and jams by coloring. It raises the grade of baking powders and declares that all food stuffs shall be what they represent themselves to he. and that no adulterations are to be tolerated. tol-erated. Must Have License. The bill further provides that per pons selling concentrated feeding stuffs for live stock shall be licensed and the standard of such feeding stuffs raised to a higher tsandard. A register fee is to be charged for all the dairy concerns, creameries and the like, in the State. The proposed law also wants butter to be real butter, and such a label placed upon it. For several months past Mr. P.-terson has been working upon his proposed j measure. Statistics have been collected from various places throughout the State, so that he contends he lias a most convincing argument for the necessity of the law. He has a long list of table ptuffs which show the marvelous profit made by adulterations. Bobbery Is Great. So great is this robbery of the people's peo-ple's bread, he declares, that it is like buying nickels with dollars. The bill has been finished and will be presented in the House of Representatives this week. The bill is an act to codify and revise certain laws of the State, providing for the creation of the otfice of Dairy and Food Commissioner, and defining the duties thereof, and defining standards j 0 purity for certain foods, to prohibit ( f c sale of foods below the standards of 1 jL J" v, or that are impure, unwhoh- j rf!c.d. adulterated or misbranded, to , provide penalties for the violation of any provision of the act, and to repeal sections 2446 to 'Jl-'ci. 7J0 to 74'i. and I 428.. to 429i. all inclusive, of the He I vised Statutes of I'tati. lf. and chap j ters 34 and 4 Laws of I'tih. 109. and j to amend sections 1.
