Show LAW SEEKS TO OUST SHERIFF Man Who Accused MXune of Bribery Years Ago Brings Charges Against Smith. t ' LOGAN, March 28.County Attorney Attor-ney A. A. Law created a sensation here yesterday when he filed a complaint in the District court charging Sheriff Thomas H. Smith with malfeasance in office. The complaint contains a half dozen counts. The Sheriff is charged with unlawfully, un-lawfully, knowingly, fraudulently and corruptly presenting claims to the County Coun-ty Commissioners which he had previously pre-viously presented to the State Auditor, and upon which he had received payment pay-ment from the State. The complaint further alleges that the Sheriff collected col-lected and retained fees which he should have turned over to the county. Sheriff Smith said last night that the filing of the complaint was a pieee of spite work on tne part-of Law and predicted that he would have no trouble trou-ble in clearing himself. Sheriff Smith is one of the most prominent horsemen in the State, and is a director in the State Fair association. This is not the . first sensational charge made by Law, while holding a public office- As a Representative of the fifth Legislative Assembly from this county he charged, at a joint session of the Legislature, that A. W. McCune, then the leading candidate for the United States Senate, had offered him a bribe of $1500 for his vote.. Tn a highly dramatic manner Law produced $85 in currency which he claimed had been given to him bv McCune to bind the $1500 alleged bribery. - The charge was made at a time when it was believed be-lieved that McCune would secure the votes necessary to elect. A rigid investigation, inves-tigation, lasting several days, resulted and McCune was vindicated, but he failed of election. |
