Jan. 19 The French Academy of Sciences Is said to have received from the Prince of Monaco a report on the chief features of his scientific campaign In the Arctic last year. Nine nationalities nationali-ties were represented among the scientists scien-tists on board. The most difficult work was the geodetic survey of tha hitherto unexplored mountain region of Spltx-bargen. Spltx-bargen. I'nder the guidance of Capt. Isaachsen. who waa with Svsrdrup on the Fram expedition, a party of seven Norwegians Nor-wegians and one Frenchman covered lt5 miles over the Interior glaciers, camping between crevice without other resources than thosa carried by their dog train. The meteorologlrai experiments were especially Interesting. Flfot balloons dispatched dis-patched from the Princess Alice explored the atmosphere up to the hitherto unat-talned unat-talned height of SO.000 feet. The air was so pure that the tiny balloons, which measured mea-sured only thrae feet In diameter, could be followed with the naked eye for a distance dis-tance of IK miles. |
