Show s One of the most important raids over made on an opium Joint in Salt Lake . u effected at 4 o'clock this morning by Sergeant John Roberts and Police- men C. A. Carlson - and Bert Seager when the three raided room 75 of the annex to the American bouse and ar- k rested two colored men, two white men and two white women together with ' two complete opium outfits and other paraphernalia. - For some time the police have suspected sus-pected that an opium joint was being operated in the building, but up to ' this morning they have been unable to secure the necessary evidence to make a raid. Just before 4 o'clock this morning the three-bluecoats went quietly up .the stairs, of the building from the ' Commercial street entrance. Just as they reached the entrance to room 75 a woman opened the door to look out into the hall. Before she could close the door Sergt. Roberts followed by "the other two officers rp shed into the room. On a bed with a (complete opium Jay-out Jay-out between them James Thomas, colored, col-ored, and a white woman were sleeping. On a bunk nearby were two white men, while on a third bunk lay CharlesRobinson, colored, n The sixth occupant of the room was the white woman who had opened the door. The entire six were placed under arrest ar-rest and with the assistance of Patrolman Patrol-man Pierce taken to the station, where they gave their names as James Thomas.colored, Charles Robinson, eel-ored, eel-ored, Frank Smitff and Joe Brans, white, Ruby Leonard and Clara Hall, white. . A return trip to the room was made and the officers took to the station two complete opium layouts, part of another layout, about $20 worth of opium, a quantity of yen shee, and other things usually found in an up-to-date den. Thomas was charged with keeping an opium house, while the other five were charged with having visited an opium joint. . The six defendants appeared, by Counsel, before Judge Diehl this morning. morn-ing. In the case of Smith and Barnes a plea of not guilty was entered and the case was set for trial Tuesday afternoon. after-noon. Bail in each case was' fixed at $-5. In the case of Thomas Robinson and the two. women the time for entering enter-ing a plea was fixed for Monday after-noop. after-noop. The bail of Thomas was fixed at $50.and that of the three others at $25 each. The two women .furnished bail and were released. |
