Show $7000 PRIZE HIPPO BURIED IN OCEAN NEW YORK, March 30. Lions, tigers, monkeys, grinning hyenas and almost al-most every other species of wild animal ani-mal were part of the cargo of the Hamburg-American line steamship Aeila, which arrived here from Hamburg. The animals came from the Karl Ilagenbeck animal farm near Hamburg, and are consigned to . dealers and mological parks throughout the United States. . For several days the Acila's voyage was extremely rough, and the keepers had considerable trouble with the animals, ani-mals, many of which became seriously seasick. A $7000 hippopotamus, said to have been the largest in captivity, died last Thursday. The beast contracted a cold shortly after the ship sailed, and that later developed into pnenmonia. The body was thrown overboard by means of block and tackle. Tho consignment consisted of eight horses, two llamas, sixty monkeys, one chimpanzee, two lions, two tigers, one kangaroo, eighteen pheasants, two ducks, two swans, two mews, threo hyenas, hy-enas, four antelopes, two gnus and 5000 canary birds. Frank Bostock was a passenger on the steamship New York. Mrs. Bostock Bos-tock said he had purchased six gorillas from the Congo and a white elephant, which he described as the only one in captivity. |
