The good 1 relations existing between the two countries coun-tries could only be of mutual advantage and would contribute toward the task of King Edward of strengthening peace and harmony between all states. King Edward in responding tn his own name and that of the Queen, thanked King Alfonso for his felicitous greeting. He deeply regretted the absence of Queen Victoria, but was rejoiced at the reason which detained her at Madrid. "We reciprocate the desire that the ties between our houses and countries, which are founded not only upon historical traditions, tra-ditions, but also on community of interests, inter-ests, may be strengthened and drawn closer together by these happy events." said King Edward. Then raising his glass, he proposed a toast to the Spanish royal family and wished prosperity, peace and progress to the kingdom of Spain. |
