Show THE SUN'S SPOTS. Last year a great spot was observable on the sun. It set all the astronomers in the United States to work. Now it is reported that the spot is broken into three or four parts, and the astronomers are again at work to find out what is the matter. To any one who believes "Warder's theory, the matter is plain enough. What seems to look like a rolling area of fire in the sun, he says, is a grand photosphere photo-sphere ; that the corona of the sun is exactly like our aurora borealis. The sun'j spots, under that theory, are due simply to the fact that the corona does not cover quite all the atmosphere of the sun, and we look through it upon the sun itself. If it is broken into three or four parts, it means that the corona has extended over a part of the space that it did not cover two months ago. ' The idea of the sun as a ball of fire, swung in its majesty to consume what is th equal of a world every year merely to light a few inferior planets will have to be given up. There are some irreconcilable irrecon-cilable obstructions in the way. . On the other hand, if we believe that the sun throws off the electricity that comes through the 95,000,000 of miles of ether that separates us from the sun, and begins its warmth when it strikes our atmosphere, then the whole' question looks plain and simple, ajad reveals such an exhibition of infinite wisdom and power and mercy that it-is a joy 'to contemplate-it.' i . |
